A day of minor disappointments but these were more than compensated for by a phone-call from Malvern Blinds to say that they can come and fix up the blinds in the front of the house on Monday afternoon. Hurrah!
Malvern Blinds, " a local firm for local people",
now operating from the town's old Fire Service building
Even though there is virtually zero footfall in our street outside of building-worker-hours, it's still a bit unsettling for Lois and me to be sitting on our sofa watching TV in the evenings, to know that we are essentially "on view" for anybody who walks or drives past. Call us oversensitive if you like! The truth is that it never feels 100% cosy without any blinds on the windows. So it'll be a big relief when we can close the blinds on our living-room window and on our bedroom window at night, and just be the two of us totally hidden from the world's gaze, which is how it should be, let's face it!
flashback to Sunday: our bedroom - note, in the window, the unstylish
flatpack packaging that shields us from public view, in the absence of blinds
Otherwise, today, apart from the promise of window-blinds, it's a day that promises much but delivers very little.
The day starts early, like every day here, because more often than not somebody rings out doorbell at 8 am, or even earlier sometimes, to warn us of something or other going on outside in the noisy chaos of the building-site that is our little neighbourhood for the moment. Today it's a guy at the door who asks us if we need to get our car out of the street today. I decide to say no, for simplicity's sake, because we've got to stay in anyway, for the turfers who are due to arrive.
Before long the street is totally impassable again - with massive holes right next to where we park our car.
if I were to drive my car out now, it would just fall into
a massive hole - so I decide not to risk it.
Call me overcautious or risk-averse if you like haha!!!
There's a silver lining however, because a couple of hours later the road guys have tarmacked over the huge hole in front of our house, so we should be able to drive straight out tomorrow morning when we've going for lunch at the 15th century Gupshill Manor at Tewkesbury - it's Lois's church's Christmas meal.
a couple of hours later, however, the holes have been
tarmacked over, which is nice
The big event here today at our actual house was supposed to be having our back yard turfed, but when the turfers turn up, it becomes apparent that they're here to do the yard behind our neighbour Matt's house. That lucky bastard !!! They promise to come back next week to do ours, but I'll believe that when I see it, and not before haha!
the turfers arrive, from so-called Ashley Botwood - is that a real person's name???
Massive disappointment strikes, however, when the guys go and do next door's back yard and not ours.
I cast an envious eye out of one of our back windows to see
the Ashley Botwood guys laying turf for our neighbour Matt
One of the complications of our life as we settle into our new home and try to get it looking like we haven't "just" moved in, is that we also want to do as much as we can to help our daughter Sarah in Australia and her family to buy a house near here, so that they can move back to the UK next year. Sarah, an accountant, has been offered her old job back, in nearby Evesham.
Sarah texts us today with a house that she and husband Francis have seen on the internet. It's a nice-looking 3-bed detached house and it's only about 10 minutes walk away from us.
We often view houses-for-sale here in Malvern for Sarah, and then we report back to her. And today Sarah wants us to make an appointment with the estate-agent to view this particular house as it's only been on the market for about 3 days.
When we ring the agent, however, it turns out that the vendors have already received a very good offer on the house, and are considering taking it off the market. The agent will ring us on Monday morning to let us know, but it doesn't sound particularly promising from Sarah and Francis's point of view.
Damn - that's another house that's gone out the window probably!!!!!
