Sunday May 21st 2023

Today Lois and I log "Day 3" of our daughter Sarah's latest stay with us - as usual Sarah, Francis and the twins are staying with us for 3 nights Friday through Sunday, while staying the remaining 4 nights of each week at a local Airbnb.

08:00 This morning there's a real treat for the twins - a video chat with their great friends in Perth, Samara and Djanna. Lois and I retreat to our bedroom to leave the family some privacy downstairs to chat with the girls and their parents.

Later the twins take mummy's phone up to their bedroom her and show Samara and Djanna their soft toys etc, which is nice!

The twins of course take these modern miracles completely for granted, and why shouldn't they? Lois and I reflect, however, on our own childhood, when if you knew somebody in Australia you had no choice but to write them a letter - what a crazy world we lived in in those far-off mid-1950's !!!!!

11:30 Lois and I decide that she and I must try and help Sarah out today as much as possible, as she's also having to to do a lot of extra weekend working on her laptop yesterday and today. Yikes - poor Sarah!

So I drive Lois, Sarah and the twins over to Victoria Park so that Sarah can take a break, and the twins can have fun at the playground there.

And Sarah manages to wind down a bit by using some of the equipment which shows it's not too late to have fun on these things, unless like Lois  and me you're in your late 70's when it does become a bit problematic. Oh dear!

12:30 We get home again in good time so that Sarah can drive Francis to a pub in town where the TV will be showing today's soccer match on Sky TV featuring Francis's beloved Leeds United in their end-of-season relegation battle with rivals West Ham United. Later we discover on our phones that the luckless Leeds have lost again, 3-1.

Poor Leeds !!!!!!

14:00 Lois and I go back up to bed for a nap, but Lois goes downstairs again at 3 pm so that she can help the twins to decorate some of her delicious home-made banana muffins, leaving Sarah free to work uninterrupted on her laptop.

Lois's home-made banana muffins,
newly-decorated by the twins - yum yum!

Francis is still out, so the rest of us have a nice dinner of fried chicken thighs, potato salad and peas out on the patio. We manage to squeeze 5 chairs round our shiny-new plastic patio table, which is nice!

fried chicken thighs on our shiny-new patio table: what could be nicer!

I can tell that Lois and I are becoming pretty tired now - we're getting old, no doubt about that. Tomorrow, however, things will suddenly be back to being just us, and we'll be wishing for it all to come back again - oh dear!

Luckily we've just got one last appointment tonight, which is a zoom chat with our other daughter, Alison, who lives in Headley, Hampshire with Ed and their 3 teenage children, Josie, Rosalind and Isaac. Josie can't be with us for the call because she's revising for her GCSE exams tomorrow. Nevertheless it's nice to unite 4 of our 5 grandchildren, for the first time since Sarah's family returned from their 7 years in Australia.

an early evening zoom call with Ali, Ed, Rosalind  and Isaac

Ed is there as well tonight, fresh from his encounter with Prince Edward at Buckingham Palace, which was an interesting experience for him, he says.

Ed also says, however, that he didn't get the chance to actually talk to the Prince, but I suppose the plus point of that is that the Prince didn't get the opportunity to ask for more money from Ed's firm to help subsidize his Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. So you win some, you lose some, your highness haha!

21:00 Time for the twins to be in bed. And Lois and I are ready for bed too, but we manage to stick around, in body if not in spirit, until 10 pm.

22:00 We go to bed - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!
