Friday July 22nd 2022

17:00 It's 5pm [Well, obviously! - Ed], and Lois and I are all alone in a crumbling Victorian mansion in Hampshire, feeling a bit jaded, to put it mildly.

We've travelled 100 miles or so from home to pet-sit the cats and tropical fish belonging to our daughter Alison, her husband Ed, and their 3 children Josie (15), Rosalind (14) and Isaac (11).

A few years ago a drive of 100 miles wouldn't have bothered me, but now it's a "big event" - that's for sure. And we take the "grey" bit of the route after we leave the M4 because it's "quieter" - makes sense to me.

When we arrive we're greeted by Josie and Rosalind, who welcome us and give us a lunch - how grown-up they're getting. My god! Alison is out of the house doing her job as a teaching assistant at a primary school, Isaac is at school and Ed is away on business in Ascot. Josie and Rosalind's school in Haslemere Surrey has broken up for the summer, but Isaac goes to school in a different county, Hampshire, and his school finishes later today.

17:00 Ed, Ali and Isaac are all here as well, and we say bye-bye as they go off for their week staying near Shanklin on the Isle of Wight.

So yes it's all coming and going today, isn't it. We watch them load up the car and disappear sob sob!

Sika, the family's Danish dog, from their 6 years
in Copenhagen (2012-2018)

We had to leave in a bit of a rush this morning - I had to spend time I wasn't expecting to spend doing some online ID checks for the building firm that are building our new house, and as a result I didn't do some of my last minute duties like switching the water heating off and making sure we didn't leave any unused milk in the fridge.

Oh well, it's too late now - damn !!!!!!

20:00 We watch a bit of TV - Alison and Ed don't get a regular TV feed for some unknown reason. Because they spent 6 years in Denmark, they got used to watching things via the internet, including catch-up TV. And it's going to take Lois and me a bit of time to get to grips with that again. Damn (again) !!!!!

We watch the first ever episode of "Avoidance", the new sitcom series about a useless single dad, Jonathan, who's got no backbone and avoids any hint of difficult decisions and conflicts. At last, a character I can identify with haha!

His long-term partner Claire has had enough of him, and in this first episode she is trying to get Jonathan to accept that they're splitting up, while Jonathan himself is still in denial and is still trying to keep the break-up from the couple's young son, Spencer. Claire, on the other hand, wants the two of them to be honest and talk the split over with the young lad.

In this scene, Jonathan's sister Danielle  is talking on the phone to Jonathan. She's not at all surprised that Claire wants to split up with Jonathan. Danielle's attitude is that she's just amazed that Claire stuck with him for so long.

Tremendous fun !!!!!!

a typically tense moment on ITV's popular daytime game show,
Tipping Point, which Lois and I have never watched

22:00 We give the cats their supper and then go to bed - zzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!
