Monday August 1st 2022

Well, Lois and I have braved our appointment with Fiona at the builders' marketing suite in Malvern this morning and talked for 3 hours about what we want in our brand-new home, including colours, radiators, hobs, ovens, showers etc. My god, what a marathon session, though.

flashback to 11 days ago - we arrive at the marketing suite
in a frenzy of excitement to reserve our brand-new home

Steve, our American brother-in-law, warned us that the choice of colours would comprise "Fifty Shades of Grey", and he is pretty much right. Where possible we choose the "least grey" option.

Altogether we select a few thousand pounds' worth of so-called "upgrades" but we're relieved at the end to see that it's still only comes to about half what we feared it might be, which is nice.

Still, we survived, which is the main thing, and afterwards we stop in at what's becoming our "regular" pub in Malvern, the Three Horseshoes, for a baked potato lunch with a "henry" (orange juice and lemonade). I daren't have anything alcoholic for fear of falling asleep after 3 hours of chat with Fiona. My god!!!!

15:30 We get back home but it's too late to go to bed for our nap, so we stick it out on the sofa with a cup of tea, a currant bun, and the puzzles in this week's Radio Times.

Some poor results again this week, I have to say.

On "Popmaster", unusually, we strike out on the 1960's, which is usually our forte, and we get one right on the 1980's and one on the 1990's. Still, two out of ten isn't anything to boast about is it.

On Eggheads we get 6 out of 10, which is par for the course for us nowadays. Unfortunately among the questions we strike out on, there are some very bad errors, which is a pity.

We're cheered up however, by an amusing Venn diagram from the series that Steve, our brother-in-law, monitors each week on the web:

Lois and I are certainly both very pessimistic about Boris Johnson's successor, no matter whether it turns out to be Sunak or Truss. We can't see either of them being a match for Keir Starmer - that's something I never thought I'd find myself saying - yikes!!!!

20:00 We wind down with stand-up comics Jon Richardson and his wife Lucy Beaumont's new travel series about Yorkshire and Lancashire seaside resorts, asking the question that's perhaps never been asked before (or will ever be asked again) - which is best? East or West?

At the end of the programme Lois and I feel like applauding Jon and Lucy for having the courage to be the first celebrity travelogue presenters to confront the issue of "What can you possibly include in a celebrity travelogue show that hasn't been done before by previous celebrity travelogue hosts?"

All tourism-worthy overseas destinations have been done to death already - everybody knows that. But Jon and Lucy highlight what used to be thought of as the unthinkable - that now the same is becoming true of all UK travel destinations as well.

Tonight Jon and Lucy are in Blackpool, Lancashire, the so-called "Las Vegas of the North", but they find that other celebrity comedians have already drained the place dry. Susan Calman, for example, has already done a feature of Blackpool's bingo halls, Ricky Tomlinson has covered the resort's top fish'n'chip shops etc etc, and so the list goes on.

Last week Jon and Lucy were in Whitby, Yorkshire, home of Dracula author Bram Stoker, where, for instance, they discovered that the Dracula-themed goth shop had already been covered extensively by Ab Fab's Joanna Lumley, as the shop-owner explained.

Pandemonium, the goth shop in Whitby, Yorkshire, where Jon and Lucy
are annoyed to find from the owner that another celebrity travelogue presenter,
Joanna Lumley, has already beaten them to it

We think the time for talking about his issue is over - and we call on media bosses to take emergency action to meet the crisis. We admit, however, that we haven't got any easy solutions.

So now it's up to you, media bosses - show us that you're worth your enormous pay checks !!!!

flashback to February 2021: Ab Fab's Joanna Lumley
visits the Whitby goth shop and meets the shop-owner,
as part of her series "Joanna Lumley's Home Sweet Home
- Travels in My Own Land"

22:00 We go to bed - zzzzzzzz!!!!!
