Do you like surprises? They add to the spice of life, don't they, especially for hard-pressed commuters. Did you see the lead from the Onion News Worcestershire Desk this morning?
It's 9 o'clock and we're still in bed - we're expecting a quiet weekend, because our daughter Sarah and her twins told us they won't be staying with us, which is a pity, but we're enjoying the extra lying-in time. We've been vaguely aware of our two phones diddling and beeping together under the bedclothes, but so what!
Ideally we should have checked them, however, because Sarah has been trying to tell us that there's been a change of plan and they will be coming after all, which is a nice surprise, and it's also one that will suit us very well as it happens.
We're always pleased to see Sarah and our twin granddaughters - they're such a delight. However, because we weren't expecting them this weekend, we haven't done our usual pre-visit shopping - bulk purchases of jumbo-size boxes of Cheerios, "catering packs" of hot chocolate powder etc. But I expect we'll manage somehow!
Lois and I don't mind at all - it's the twins who make the sandwiches, assemble the fruit etc in our kitchen. Plus we think that Bluebell Mouse and Black-and-White Cat certainly deserve a bit of a treat. As usual this past week the two toys have been working hard on their makeshift PC's up in one of our guest bedrooms, trying to pull their firm Cats R Me, out of the threat of bankruptcy.
We should have checked the phones, I know, but we just "couldn't be bothered" - what madness !!!! But I expect you know that feeling - it's part of the "weekend feeling" isn't it these days - "let the phones diddle and beep all they want - let's enjoy ourselves, the weekend starts here!".
And an unexpected bonus - they'll be able to help us get all that "stuff" - garden tools, plant pots, step-ladder etc - off our patio and into our shiny new shed that D&M Sheds brought and erected for us yesterday.
behind me you can see some of the "stuff"
that's now got to be moved into our shiny new shed
Have you noticed? Historians make a lot about "how the Egyptians built the pyramids" but nobody ever talks about all the subsequent, less glamorous perhaps, work of moving "stuff" into the pyramids - coffins, statues, pictures, as well as the tools and plant-pots, the watering cans and step-ladders etc that otherwise would be out in the rain and getting rusty by the century.
flashback to Ancient Egypt: workers carrying out the high-profile
work of creating a pyramid. But who was it who did the
arguably "less glamorous" job of moving "stuff" into the
pyramids after all the newsmen etc had gone away?
Yes, who was it who carried out the arguably "less glamorous" work of moving stuff into the pyramids after they'd been "signed off" by the builders? I think we should be told, don't you?
But be that as it may, here, without further ado, let me introduce our unexpectedly augmented and incredibly motivated team that's going to help us do the job of "populating the shed"!
(left to right) introducing the "team": our daughter Sarah, Lois,
and our 10-year-old granddaughters Lily and Jessica...
When Lois and I originally ordered the shed from D&M Sheds, we tried to give D&M helpdesk stalwart Emma an idea of what we were going to use the shed for, stupidly forgetting what we realise today is obviously going to be the shed's number 1 use: a venue for tea-parties for the twins and their stuffed toys.
What an omission!!! How crazy we were !!!! But luckily for us, the shed, although only a modest 6ft x 4 ft "effort", will "do the business" in this area as well, which is lucky!

19:00 After a hastily prepared meal of sausage, mash and mixed veg (well, Lois and I didn't know there were going to be five of us, did we, but we've got used to "thinking on our feet", to put it mildly!) we settle down to watch some more episodes of the Anglo-Canadian series of 25 years ago, "The Worst Witch", all about a girls-only academy for budding witches, Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches, a school of magic, based on the novels of Jill Murphy.
we settle down to watch more episodes of "The Worst Witch",
the Anglo-Canadian televised version of Jill Murphy's books
We're able to access "The Worst Witch" tonight again without a problem. But I'm beginning to feel slightly worried, because I feel sure the 30 days "free trial" must be up by now. Let's hope I didn't inadvertently click on "renew" in some moment of madness. Yikes !!!!
When I sign on to Amazon, there isn't anything to say that I'm on a trial, or when the trial began, or when it ended or is going to end. Is this part of their cunning plan to "soften me up", and make me renew in a fit of madness, either intentionally or unintentionally?
I think I should be told, don't you!
We watch several more episodes tonight - like a billion - or more than a billion, maybe. And the twins are absolutely enthralled by the show again, which is nice to see.
And there's a genuine mystery for me also. I'm a language-buff and an accent-buff, and I can't help noticing that the cast are talking British for most of the episodes, but in Series 2 Episode 1 the same actors are all talking "Canadian". Lois, Sarah and the twins don't notice, but you can't get a mysterious phenomenon past an old "accent-hand" like me.
What's the explanation? Is this truly evidence that magic genuinely exists? Did crusty old Worst Witch Academy headmistress Miss Hardbroom just wrinkle her noise and change the dialogue instantaneously from British into Canadian?
Once again, I think I should be told, don't you.
But that'll be for another day now. I'll try and find out, so watch this space.
21:00 Sarah and the twins go to bed - zzzzzz!!!!
22:00 Lois and I go to bed - zzzzzz!!!!
