Sunday November 7th 2021

08:00 Lois had a rubbish night - it's a tummy upset, so we don't have our usual Sunday. But at least it gives me the opportunity to clear up our so-called "business" letter-rack, which has currently been trying to carry 300% of its theoretical capacity. Usually Lois spends a few hours in the dining-room on Sundays, taking part in her sect's 2 worship service on zoom, and so I can't get access to our filing cabinet: but not today - hurrah!

Filing away business correspondence, receipts, bills etc may not be everybody's idea of fun, but it certainly gives me enormous pleasure! [You're just sick: and it's time to seek treatment! - Ed]

with just 5 items in it, sleeping peacefully below our bookshelves

Who can forget the pleasure Sheldon felt on "Big Bang Theory" when he got the chance to sort out Howard's closet? And how disappointed Sheldon was when Leonard burst in and told him it was time he drove him home?

Leonard: Let's move it, yeah?!

Sheldon: How come I never get to do anything I want to do?

Howard [to Leonard]: You know, if he really wants to stay and finish, I can give him a ride home.

Sheldon [to Leonard]: Please Leonard, he says it's okay!

Tremendous fun !!!!!

13:00 I hurry into the kitchen and make 2 servings of one of my signature lunches: goat's cheese and cucumber in a wholemeal bun, with lettuce and mini-tomatoes: yum yum !

17:30 Lamb chops are on the way, and the news from Steve, our American brother-in-law, that today is International Gin Day imparts an extra frisson to my pre-dinner aperitif. Isn't it  wonderful to feel part of something bigger than oneself haha!

19:00 We watch an interesting TV documentary about singer Elton John.

Lois and I didn't know that Elton was famous in the US before he became known in the UK, especially as a result of one of his early songs, "Your Song".

But I do remember that I first saw Elton in 1970 when I was living as a student in Japan. Elton was singing "Your Song" on my cheap little black-and-white Japanese TV set, the one that I bought for about £30 and kept in my room at the Tokunaga's house in Tokyo.

I remember thinking, "Who is this guy. They're saying he's English, but I've never heard of him."

Only one photo survives of my little bed-sitting-room in Tokyo, where I lived for 11 months from 1970 to  1971, a photo which also showcases the little TV I kept on a low table. The photo is a picture of one of my Japanese student friends doing his Elvis impersonation on my guitar - a typical thing that young Japanese guys used to like to do in those days.

Tonight's documentary about Elton on the Sky Arts Channel features my favourite music journalist and pundit, Kate Mossman of the New Statesman, which is nice.

And one good thing about these documentaries is that you see people explaining the lyrics of the songs, although sometimes you find out they're not at all about what you think they're about, which is a pity!

Like for one of my favourite Elton John songs, "Daniel".

I know the main words of this song, which seems to be a song to his elder brother:

"Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane / I can see the red tail-lights heading for Spain / Oh it looks like Daniel / Must be the clouds in my eyes"
"They say Spain is pretty but I've never been / And Daniel says it's the best place that he's ever seen / He should know, he's been there enough / Oh I miss Daniel oh I miss him so much".

I always thought that the singer must have been jealous of his older brother who's always jetting off to Spain from, say, Luton Airport, to have fun-filled holidays on the Costa del Sol in Spain, with one or other young people's travel companies, like "Club 18 to 30", "Club Med" etc, during which he'll go to bed with lots of women.

I find out tonight that the song's actually about the Vietnam War. How come? And who knew that? [I expect a lot of people did! - Ed]

Fascinating stuff !!!!

21:00 We wind down with an old episode of the 1990's sitcom "The Brittas Empire", which revolves around Whitbury New Town Sports and Leisure Centre, and the life and career of its well-meaning but uncharismatic and unpopular manager, Gordon Brittas.

Episode synopsis: Helen and the children have gone on holiday, leaving Brittas home alone. Gavin's former girlfriend Jennifer returns, intent on reconciling, which causes a rift in his relationship with Tim, but then they discover that Jen has escaped from a mental institution with a case of explosives. To participate in Energy Saving Week, Colin has created a generator powered by the centre's 'waste material'; Jen attaches Brittas to the generator and he is electrocuted.

The usual chaos and mayhem again tonight in the leisure centre. It's nice to see that unpopular manager Gordon Brittas's usual habit of annoying people is put to good use when gay Gavin's former girl-friend Jennifer arrives, on day-release from a mental hospital.

Jennifer suffers from repressed feelings of anger. Doctors have been trying for years to get Jennifer to express, and work through, the anger she feels against her deceased parents, but the doctors' efforts have all been to no avail up till now.

However annoying manager Gordon succeeds in making Jennifer so angry that she chains him to deputy-manager Colin's faeces-recycling machine, which electrocutes him when somebody somewhere in the leisure centre "goes to the toilet".

Yes, and as a result Jennifer is cured, at last able to fully express her feelings of anger, which is a heart-warming ending, no doubt about that!

Jennifer, who suffers from repressed anger, becomes enraged
by leisure centre manager Gordon, and chains him to deputy-manager Colin's
faeces-recycling machine

somebody somewhere in the leisure centre suddenly "goes to the toilet"
and this has the effect of bringing deputy manager Colin's machine to life,
and electrocuting manager Gordon

Also tonight, we see a bit more of the changes that weepy receptionist Carole has been making to the Reception Desk area in the leisure centre lobby. She already brings her 3 young children to work with her each day and she keeps them all in drawers and cupboards in the reception desk area.

Now she's also installed a range of kitchen equipment, including a microwave oven, plus a washing machine for laundering the babies' nappies etc.

this morning weepy receptionist Carole is baking some cupcakes
and muffins for herself and her children, in her new microwave oven

..and washing their soiled nappies in her washing machine

Tremendous fun !!!!!

Lois and I, however, can't help wondering about the electrical safety aspect, however. It's well known that Carole only has one electrical socket to play with behind her desk.

Is this a safety hazard? We're not sure, but we certainly think we should be told. Oh dear!

22:00 We go to bed - zzzzzzzzzzz!!!!
