Yes, Friends, have YOU read about Christopher Nolan's latest hit film "The Odyssey" yet? Tickets are selling fast, my spies tell me (!), even before the film "premieres", in its regional East Hampshire 'manifestation', which is as good indicator as anything of a sure-fire hit, no question about that!
But don't take my word for it! The East Hampshire edition of Onion News has more on that story - so check your copy, and do it now!!!!
But just a thought from "Yours Truly" here... Could Zeus's troubling 'extramarital affairs with nymphs, goddesses, and mortals' be an idea for Nolan's next epic, maybe with one of today's 'happening' teen 'heart-throbs' like, say, Aussie pop-star Jason Donovan, or similar, in the title role, maybe?
I wonder....!
Be that as it may (!), today's Onion News entertainment headlines certainly bring a hint of a vapid smile to the faces of me and my wife Lois this morning, as we do our '30 minutes of squelching' (!), on the hallowed turf of local soccer heroes, Liphook United today, that's for sure!
And, as we walk, Lois and I are also laughing for a good reason about Nolan's "Zeus-less" epic "The Odyssey", because the Trojan War, which features so prominently in the soon-to-be-hit film, is very much on our minds currently, would you believe!
And we'll be keen to find out, if the modern studies are true, the ones indicating that "the Trojans must have been crazy to lead the giant Wooden Horse into their city, given that, at times, 'loud giggling' was clearly to be heard from inside its wooden 'ribs'".
And busy though we undoubtedly are today, 'as per usual' (!), we even somehow find time this morning to stop by the run-down clubhouse windows to check player-manager Steve Harding's latest team selection for Saturday's East Hampshire Premier League "grudge match" against local deadly rivals Netley, the much-feared "Dock-Leafers", of all the teams they could have been drawn against!
Go "The Hookers" !!!!!
As you will know, the film's story (based on true events) kicks off with the Greeks besieging the city of Troy, then getting fed up after 10 years and pretending to give up and go home, but leaving behind a massive Wooden Horse, supposedly as an offering to the gods for their safe passage home to Greece.
And the gullible Trojans, when they see that the Greeks seem to have gone home, then wheel the big Horse-statue into the city, unaware that it's full of armed Greeks hiding inside - "It's become a bit of a cliche, but it might just work", as one of the Greek leaders had reportedly suggested - what madness, you say, but in fact it did work, and "in spades" !!!!
And by total coincidence, Lois and I will be starting today, after the long summer break, on our preparation for next Monday's meeting of our local U3A "Intermediate Latin for Old Codgers Group", where Roman author Virgil's version of the Trojan War will be on the table, and in its original language, Latin, which will be something of a challenge!
I wonder.....!!!!
An enjoyable evening, but Lois and I just wonder if playwright Alan Ayckbourn made a tactical error in keeping fractious couple Geoff and Eva's terrifying dog George "off camera" throughout the play. It's a tactic which certainly adds to the general air of menace, but totally misses an imaginative portrayal of the dog's more thoughtful and inventive side, which is a pity.
flashback to last winter: the local U3A "Intermediate Latin for Old Codgers" group
in full session: group leader Joe at the whiteboard explaining some point of grammar
to his mostly-female group members, jocularly called "Joe's harem" - what madness!!!
20:00 What a day! And limited to only a couple of hours in bed this afternoon for 'statutory nap-time', Lois and I are "plumb tuckered out" by evening (!), and glad to "veg out" by watching a re-run of noted TV playwright Alan Ayckbourn's flagship, iconic 1972 masterpiece "Absurd Person Singular".
The ferocious dog's more intellectual qualities are only referred to in passing, in this iconic scene from one of the dinner parties, where Eva 'unloads' about George the dog to close friend Sidney.
Poor George!!!!
And how frustrating it must be for George just to be used for his skills in scaring off intruders, and not for his ground-breaking ideas and ability to "think outside the box", or should I say "outside the cage"? [No! - Ed]
Is there scope for a sequel exploring, and celebrating, the world of George's imagination and breadth of vision perhaps, if Ayckbourn is still around?
I wonder.....!
Will this do?
[Oh just go to bed! - Ed]
22:00 We go to bed - zzzzzzzz!!!!!
