Friday 2 August 2019

09:00 Lois and I drive over to the small town of Bishops Cleeve to shop at the local Tesco supermarket and the nearby greengrocer’s. Afterwards we donate to a local charity shop 5-6 large bags filled with our daughter Sarah's unwanted kitchen utensils and the like – some of the piles of stuff she left with us when she moved to Australia in December 2015, together with Francis and their (then) 2.5-year-old twins , Lily and Jessie.

Lois getting ready to drive over to Bishops Cleeve

We come home and relax with a cup of coffee. We feel very pleased with ourselves for donating Sarah's old kitchen utensils to charity: it's been a lot of work retrieving them all from here and there in the attic and then sorting them out. But it all forms a significant part of our current downsizing mini-project, which is nice.

11:00 I start reading 2 more pages of Anna Grue's Danish crime novel, "The Further You Fall", which is our U3A Danish group's current project, and I prepare vocabulary lists for the 2 pages in question - I do that to save the members of the group for having to look up all the difficult words in a dictionary: I am so thoughtful ha ha ha !!!

My goal is to try to read 2 new pages a day and at the same time prepare the associated vocabulary lists.

Anna Grue's novel " The Further You Fall ",
our U3A Danish group's current project

It’s a murder story. A cleaning assistant, Lilliana, whom no one knows anything about (not even her last name is known), has been murdered (garrotted) while working late in the kitchens of a large Danish advertising agency.

No one who works at the advertising agency really knows Lilliana well or has ever exchanged more than a few words with her. So Lilliana is a bit of a mystery corpse.

In these new pages I’m reading today, one of the agency’s staff, Christoffer, suddenly recalls seeing Lilliana with a friend of the same age or so, sitting together and having a coffee in a local cafe - the friend is a black woman, "very black" (!).  Christoffer says he has never seen anyone with such dark skin. And this black friend's hair was braided in “a million long, thin braids”, he says, tied at the neck with a strip of fabric.

Dan, who’s the hero of this novel, an advertising man working at the same agency as Lilliana, hears Christopher's anecdote about the black woman and promises to pass it on to Flemming, his friend in the local police.

This morning, I read pages 61 and 62 of the book's digital version. And I think I'm seeing a crucial moment in Dan's career: the moment he decides not to wait for the police to investigate the case, but to do some research himself, which must be how all amateur detectives start. He initially tries to contact Flemming at the police station, but gets no answer.

On impulse Dan decides to pop into the cafe where Christoffer says the murdered cleaner, Lilliana, used to meet her African friend for a coffee. The black woman no longer works at the café, apparently, but one of her ex-colleagues knows more or less where she lives – “in a red building on the corner of Jernbanegade and Jyllandsgade - all the way up at the top”.

Dan now has a piece of information that the police do not yet have. But will he tell them, before he takes it further?

Dan Sommerdahl - the future amateur detective

Flemming Torp, the local police detective inspector

A classic moment perhaps - Dan can now try to solve the case before the police can. And maybe all amateur detectives start like that - even Sherlock Holmes. Maybe Sherlock initially tried to call Inspector Lestrade with some important information, but Lestrade was out of his office and didn't answer, so Sherlock decided to solve the case himself. But maybe that’s a little fanciful!

We will have to see.

Inspector Lestrade (left) with Sherlock Holmes

12:30 We have lunch and afterwards I go to bed and take a short afternoon nap. I've been trying for a week or so not to get up before 6 am and to limit my daily afternoon nap to 30 minutes, or miss it out completely, but the results so far aren't that good - damn! I feel my energy levels are at rock bottom - damn (again) !!!!

I just hope that my usual pick-me-up  - a strong gin and tonic at 5pm - will refresh me - help !!!!

15:00 I get up. Lois is starting on the next phase of our current downsizing mini project: dolls’ clothes. Lois is feeling very nostalgic and is enjoying rooting through the big bag of our daughters’ old dolls’ clothes: both Alison and Sarah are now in their 40’s - yikes !!! You know you are getting old when your kids are approaching middle age, no doubt about that !!!!!

Lois is more than happy to have the opportunity to root through
the big bag stuffed with our adult daughters’ old dolls’ clothes - so nostalgic !!!

16:00 We relax with a cup of tea and a biscuit on the couch and listen to a little radio, an interesting programme in the series "The Last Word". The programme's host is the charming Matthew Bannister.

Russi Taylor died recently unfortunately - she was the voice of Minnie Mouse. During her time at Disney, she became very close romantically to Dwayne Allwine, the voice of Mickey Mouse.

When the couple decided to get married, the Walt Disney studio got a little nervous - their characters, Minnie and Mickey, were being portrayed just as sweethearts, not as a married couple, and the studios feared that the planned marriage between their “voices” would be bad for the franchise's image, and they tried to put a news black-out on the couple's marital plans.

And that's why Russi and Dwayne’s affair became known as "the love that dares not squeak its name".

Russi Taylor and Dwayne Allwine (the voices of Minnie and Mickey Mouse)

18:00 We have dinner, and spend the rest of the evening watching some television, an interesting documentary about the latest techniques (multi-beam sonar, photogrammetry, etc.) for investigating underwater shipwrecks and other archaeological remains that lie beneath the ocean's surface. The techniques have the same effect as would draining all the water out of the Mediterranean for example, and then taking conventional photos of what’s on the seabed.

Lois and I watch a lot of TV documentaries, which is nice, but this has the downside that we often see similar programmes about similar subjects, like tonight.

We already know a lot about the Santorini volcanic eruption and the subsequent tsunami (c. 1600 BC) that set off the decline of the Minoan culture on the island of Crete. And we already know a lot about the Campi Flegrei area near the Italian city of Naples, which is a hotbed of hidden volcanoes - yikes, scary !!!!!!

And we also know a lot about the Roman port city of Baiae, the ancient world’s "Sin City", that gradually sank beneath the waves over the centuries, along with all its bars and brothels, etc - glub glub glub.

Fortunately, however, tonight's programme also includes a feature about a major sea battle between Carthage and Rome that took place in the 3rd century BC, according to the ancient Greek historian Polybius, a topic which Lois and I did not know very much about.

Very interesting - Carthage was then the dominant sea power in the western Mediterranean, and after Rome had subjugated all the other Italian cities, they wanted to strengthen their navy and challenge Carthage's dominance as a sea power.

Until recently, historians didn't know anything much about the great sea battle that Polybius wrote about - in particular, exactly where the battle took place, for example. But in the sea off the coast of Sicily, these new scientific techniques have revealed around 12 3-foot-wide metallic "battering rams", which were then the main way ships sank other ships, by smashing large holes in them. The battering rams in question are now actually strewn over a massive area, together with other remains from the ships, and are irrefutable proof that the battle took place there.

the area off the coast of Sicily, where 12 giant "battering rams" and other
remains from a large sea battle have been revealed by the latest scientific techniques

This sea battle was very important – it marked Rome's emergence as the new superpower in the Mediterranean, and the Romans thought it important enough to record the exact date of the battle: March 10, 241 BC.

How fascinating !!!!!

22:00 We go to bed - zzzzzzzzzzzz !!!

Anna Grues krimiroman ”Dybt at falde”,

Og derfor blev deres affære kendt som ”the love that dare not squeak its name”.
