05:00 I get up early and send a
birthday message on Facebook to our elder daughter, Alison, currently on
vacation with Ed, her husband, and their 3 children in France - she has her
44th birthday today.
Flashback to 1975: us, the proud
parents with our first child, Alison
Alison today, with Lois - a recent photo:
evidence
that babies do grow up if you look
after them ha ha!
Later in the day, Alison puts a
post up on Facebook. The family had decided to spend her birthday by driving
across the border to Spain, looking for some unusual birthday presents over
there. Unfortunately, they discovered that today is a holiday in Spain - the country’s
national day, so all the shops were closed.
My god, poor Alison !!! What a sick
world we live in!!!
a few photos Alison took in San
Sebastian today:
walking behind Ed and the kids
Ed, half in shot, to the left.
10:00 Lois and I tumble out of
the shower and after breakfast we head out into the vegetable garden, and to our fruit bushes and fruit trees. We do a little more weeding and generally
tidy up so that during our absence on vacation our neighbours, Stephen and
Frances, will not have too hard a time identifying where the real vegetables
are and where the jungle of weeds are: also exactly where the fruit bushes are
etc – good grief, what madness!
We weed a bit in the vegetable garden
so our neighbours, Stephen and Frances,
can distinguish the real vegetables
from the jungle of weeds that surround them -
my god, what madness !!!!
11:00 We come back in the house
and relax with a cup of coffee on the sofa. Afterwards we read together the
next 5-6 pages of Anna Grues's crime novel, "The Further You Fall",
because our U3A Danish group is going to be gathering here at 2:30 pm for the
group's regular fortnightly meeting.
12:30 We have lunch and
afterwards I go to bed and take a short afternoon nap. I get up at 1:45 pm and
prepare for our group meeting.
14:30 The group members arrive,
but unfortunately we don’t start the business of studying a little Danish until 3 o’clock.
We are all old crows, and for starters, members want Lois to give them a guided
tour of our backyard. And after that everyone settles down in the living room to
discuss their various illnesses, aches and pains, etc. – my god, what madness
!!!!
But at least one interesting
point emerges from the discussion. Joy recalls that Alison and Ed came close to
moving to Hong Kong 2-3 years ago - the ex-colony at that time seemed to be a
completely peaceful but vibrant city - thank God Ed didn't get the job, when we
see the state of the place today and its possible future with the Chinese - my god, what a nightmare that would have
been !!!!
Flashback to the 1980’s: Hong Kong in
happier times, with Maggie and Dennis
on one of the ex-colony's old British
double-decker trams
Surprising, but in the remaining
60 minutes we manage to read as many pages of Anna Grue's novel as usual, which
is encouraging. And we have also begun to speculate as a group about the
precise circumstances of the murder, and about one of the police's first
suspects, which is nice and also stimulating, I have to say.
Anna Grue's "The Further You Fall",
our U3A Danish group current project
The meeting ends, but members stay
sitting and talking in our living room for another 15-20 minutes. Eventually
they leave, and Lois and I can relax with a cup of tea and a slice of bread
with home-made gooseberry marmalade - yum yum!
We are totally exhausted, to put it mildly, after the morning’s gardening, also the usual preparations for the
group meeting, and finally, “leading” the actual meeting - yikes, what a day. We're
getting old, no doubt about that.
18:00 We have dinner and spend
the rest of the evening listening to the radio, a concert from the BBC's Prom
Concert season.
An enjoyable concert - it's nice
to hear Elgar's "Sea Pictures", which Lois and I haven't heard
before, we think. The great man converted about 5 of his favourite poems to
songs: all the poems were about the sea, and one of them was written by his
wife, Alice, which was nice.
Lois and I sit and try to imagine the
scene in Elgar's household: Edward at the piano, composing his latest piece of
music, while Alice sits on the couch, busy with her latest poem.
"Alice is at it again,"
Edward must have thought, comments Lois. And we are reminded of Noel Coward's
moving song with this title, published
in 1946, the year Lois and I were born.
A moving subject: an elderly
married couple living in a quiet, rural village, somewhere in England, along
with a lively young daughter, Alice, who disappears most evenings to have fun with someone, somewhere - the exact
details the parents are unfortunately not completely sure about, but they both know
without a doubt that "Alice is at it again", which is touching.
Good old Noel Coward - he always had his finger on the pulse, no doubt about that.
And Lois and I sympathise with Alice's parents - we are reminded of the angst-ridden evenings we spent after our 2 daughters started dating. Tempestuous days !!!!

”Fun is the one thing that money
can’t buy”, as the Beatles memorably sang in their ”She’s Leaving Home”song on Sgt Pepper – I often think of that line.
22:00 We go to bed - zzzzzzz !!!!

44. fødselsdag i dag.
Alison i dag
– to nylige billeder: bevis for,
at babyer
Familien havded
var lukkede.
Du godeste, stakkels Alison!!!
Sikke en syg verden vi lever i !!!
et par fotos
Alison tog i San Sebastian i dag:

at falde”, fordi vores U3A danske gruppe samles her kl 14:30 til gruppens
Men mindst ét interessant punkt kommer ud af diskussionen. Joy mindes
stimulerende.
Anna Grues ”Dybt
at falde”, vores U3A danske gruppes
nuværende
projekt
16:00 Mødet slutter, men medlemmer bliver siddende og snakkende i vores
stue i endnu 15-20 minutter.
Lykkelige dage!!!!
22:00 Vi går i seng – zzzzzzz!!!!
