Last blog before our holiday - yikes, scary exciting scary !
08:30 We take a shower and get up. We spend the morning doing tasks on our respective to-do lists in preparation for our coming vacation. I start a small notebook where I write all the important details about our trip - ticket numbers, phone numbers, etc.

I order from Amazon a book that I can read on the plane:
"The Unbearable Lightness of Being" is a novel by the Czech author
Milan Kundera, and it seems more intellectual than my usual reading material,
so it may be that I actually end up by not reading it and just dozing or seeing
a movie again - damn it! Yet another bad choice !!!!
The story is about two women, two men, one dog and their
lives during the "Prague spring". It takes place mainly in the late 1960s and
early 1970s. It examines the artistic and intellectual life of Czech
society until the invasion by the Soviet Union and three other Warsaw pact countries, and in the invasion's aftermath.
The main characters are:
1. Tomáš, a happily married but unfaithful surgeon;
2. His wife Tereza, a photographer, anguished by her
husband's infidelity;
3. Tomáš's mistress, Sabina, a free-thinking artist;
[That's enough foreign accents for today - Ed.]
4. Franz, a Swiss university professor, who is another of Sabina's lovers;
5. And finally... Karenin, Tomas's and Tereza's dog
We'll have to see. They recommended the book a few days
ago on the radio. But I have just read the Wikipedia article about the book,
and unfortunately, , I do not have the slightest idea of what the book is
about, or what the main characters' attitudes and philosophies are. And I do
not understand the so-called philosophical principles underpinning the story.
Damn (again) !!!!
Unfortunately, I cannot
understand the so-called
philosophical principles underpinning the
story - damn!
Unfortunately also, I cannot identify with any of the
main characters. I suspect that when I am reading the book, I will be forced to
identify myself most with Karenin, Tomas's and Tereza's dog. Generally I do not
like dogs that much - I'm a bit of a cat person, like Lois. But I like
Karenin's style, I have to admit.
Karenin hates change, and when her owners, Tomas and
Tereza, move out into the country so Tomas can drop his
"bits on the side" and finally become faithful to his wife, the dog is a
little dissatisfied at first. Poor Karenin !!!!!!
But the dog finally decides to get the best out of the
situation. And on top of that, she soon becomes best of friends with a pig
called Mefisto: I admire that in a dog: it shows flexibility, something I set a
high price on.
Karenin is first and foremost a flexible dog
- she feels equally at home
in left-hand and right-hand drive cars, and
always enjoys looking at the view
To sum up, the dog Karenin shares my philosophy to a T.
She hates change, but if change comes, she tries to get the best out of the
situation. And she's flexible, as I say.
However, I'm not entirely sure whether Karenin's friend,
Mefisto the pig, is "my kind of pig" or not. Mefisto's personality is
not quite so well filled out by the author, judging from the Wikipedia article.
Some authors just cannot create really believable pigs, no doubt about it. It
may be a bit of a blind spot with many of them.
Mefisto (left) with Karenin (right):
finally a dog I can identify with!
11:00 Lois is in the meantime calling our travel
insurance company to tell them about her recent digestive problems that our
doctor has prescribed pills for. They reply that since the problems arose after
we arranged insurance coverage, it does not make any difference to the
situation, thank goodness.
13:00 We have lunch and afterwards I go to bed and have a
huge afternoon nap. Lois meanwhile goes out in the backyard to clear up a
little. We have asked Neil to take care of our garden, cut the grass etc and he
plans to drop in here on Friday to talk to Lois about what she wants him to do.
We also want him to clear and clean the gutters where a mini jungle has grown
up for some reason. My god, what madness !!!!
Lois tidies up a little in the backyard
16:00 We relax on the couch with a cup of tea and a piece
of cake. Stephen, our neighbor, swings by and we talk a little about this and
that. He and Frances have agreed to look after our house while we are away on
vacation.
18:00 We have dinner and watch television. The 3rd part
of an interesting documentary series is on, "Elizabeth our Queen",
all about Elizabeth's 65-year-long reign. This episode is about Elizabeth's
attempt to modernize the monarchy in the 1950s, using television appearances,
etc.
An interesting program that is very nostalgic for Lois
and me. I had forgotten all about Lord Altrincham, a left-wing Conservative
peer, who started a debate in 1957 when he criticized the Queen for being out
of touch with ordinary people.
Flashback to August
1957:
Lord Altrincham attacks the Queen's style of
speaking, etc.
In August 1957, he argued in an article that Queen
Elizabeth II's court was far too upper-class and British, and he tried to
promote the idea of a more "classless" court with more involvement of
people from the Commonwealth: Australia, Canada, etc. More personally, he
attacked the Queen's style of speaking as a "pain in the neck".
"Like her mother," he wrote, "she appears to be unable to string a couple of sentences
together without a written script ... the statements that are put in her mouth
give the impression of a priggish schoolgirl, captain of the hockey team.
" or something similar.
Lord Altrincham's comments turned into a big scandal at
the time , but now it's all forgotten - such is life!
22:00 We carry on watching television. The 1st episode of
the 2nd season of a sitcom called "Mum" is on, which Lois and I have
not seen before. It's about a widow, Cathy, about to turn 60 years old, whose
family constantly tread all over her and belittle her without realizing that that's what they are doing.
The acting is definitely very subtle, but there isn't that
much to laugh at, and it's misleading to call this series a sitcom: especially
if you're a pair of old crows like Lois and me! It's all just sad, sad, sad in our
opinion. Oh dear!
The series falls slap in the middle of the miserable and
annoying British tradition of sad and unfunny sitcoms. As a drama it’s fine
!!!!
Poor 60-year-old Cathy !!! Her son and his girlfriend
live with her: they do not help with the housework or cooking, and they disturb Cathy at
night with their loud sex. Cathy wants to hook up with her nice neighbor,
Michael, but Cathy's family always manage to sabotage Cathy and Michael's
relationship without even knowing they are doing it.
Cathy's family also make her feel old - they are quite
tactless.
I recalled that I had a similar experience when I was
"only" 69: Lois and I were in Lois' niece Sharon's house, and I said
proudly, "I can't believe I'm turning 70 later this year." Sharon's
answer was, "Oh, I thought you were already in your 70's!". A bit of
a case of : sounds of an ego being punctured, no doubt about that ha ha ha.
22:30 We go to bed - zzzzzzzzz!

Historien handler
Hovedpersonerne
er:
1.
Tomáš,
en utro kirurg;
2.
hans
kone Tereza, en fotograf, der bliver pint af sin mands utroskab;
3.
4.
Franz,
en schweizisk universitetsprofessor, der også er en af Sabinas elskere;
5.
Stakkels
Karenin !!!!!!
Men hunden
i
Men kort sagt deler
Lois går i mellemtiden ud i baghaven for at rydde lidt op.
Du
godeste, sikke et vanvid!!!!
Lois
rydder op lidt i baghaven
mennesker.
tilbageblik til august 1957:
Lord
Altrincham angreber dronningens stil at tale osv.
I august 1957
familie formår at sabotere deres forhold, uden at vide, at de gør det.
Cathys familie
seng – zzzzzzzzz!
