Wednesday, September 26 – Wednesday October 3 2018

Wednesday 26th of September we drive via Exmoor down to Lynton in the county of Devon and check in at our holiday cottage.

Halfway through the journey we make a stop in the beautiful town of Exford

We make another stop on Exmoor to look at the famous wild ponies

Friday, September 28 we drive to the nearby harbor town of Lynmouth and take a walk up the beautiful gorge, peaceful now, but where a wall of water cascaded down in 1952 during the famous floods - I'm old enough to remember the headlines in our newspaper, and the pictures I saw on our 12 inch tv screen - yikes, scary !!!!

Flashback to 1952: the famous floods

Saturday, September 29th we spend the day in Woody Bay where the local steam train fanatics are holding their annual festival and we have a ride on one of their old revived steam trains.

On our way back to the holiday cottage, we unfortunately get stuck for an hour in the parking lot together with several other visitors when an accident occurs at the parking lot's entrance. A car collides with a motorcycle and first an ambulance and later a red helicopter arrives to airlift the motorcyclist to the hospital.

Sunday, September 30th we visit a food festival in Lynton Town Hall. We buy a couple of homemade meat pies and some homemade cakes. I also buy a bottle of "Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin" and a second-hand book about the life of Bror Blixen, the Danish writer Karen Blixen's Swedish husband.

In the afternoon we head over to the beautiful village of Malmsmead, where the plot of the famous novel "Lorna Doone" played out.

Monday, October 1, we drive back down to the nearby harbor town of Lynmouth.

We take the cliff railway up to Lynton and have a cup of coffee at a cafe overlooking the bay. The cliff railway is the highest and steepest water-powered funicular railway in the world.

Then we take the cliff railway back down to Lynmouth.

We eat lunch (fish and chips) at a restaurant that overlooks the cliff railway up to Lynton.

In the evening by coincidence we see a tv programme featuring the selfsame funicular railway: "Four in a Bed", where 4 sets of B&B owners from all over Britain compete to be named "Best value B&B owner of the week. What a coincidence - and what a crazy world we live in !!!

The same cliff railway is on tv the same evening - what madness !!!

Wednesday 3rd of October we return to Cheltenham. Halfway home we make a stop to see Rosemary, Lois' childhood friend and have a cup of tea with her.

Happy days! - these happy days are yours and mine, Lois.
