English translation

10:00 Lois and I go into the village and buy a few things in the convenience store. On our way we swing by the local post office and send a couple of packages to our grandchildren in Denmark and Australia. We come home and relax with a cup of coffee.

We talk a little about onion.com's latest news about Disney's plans for a new trilogy of Star Wars movie to be released in the next decade, as well as a live-action series to be debuted in the near future.

The news source is asking Lois and me personally for our opinions, not something that happens every day, let's face it! Exciting! We feel a little bit honored, and discuss the arguments on both sides without reaching a firm conclusion.

Fortunately, a representative selection of the news source’s readers have weighed in with a range of interesting comments, such as (1) "10th, 11th and 12th episodes in a 40-year franchise are always the best" (Sean Feiman, Therapy Puppeteer) , (2) "My biggest hope for Star Wars has always been to see how the franchise would look if it was restricted within a television budget" (Bob Hutchison, bowling historian) and "It will be exciting to see a fresh new cast of characters following the exact same plot trajectory as the others " (Kathryn Kemp," gaffing instructor).

We decide that we lean towards the third and last point of view, which Kathryn Kemp expresses. I recognize her face, but I'm not sure I remember her name. I suspect, at least, that we have seen her opinions before on Onion News, and we like her style. She seems to change jobs frequently, and often takes on the kind of work that requires highly skilled labor, but it seems she can master everything very quickly - she is certainly versatile, no doubt about that!

She identifies herself as a gaffing instructor. We are not quite sure exactly what her teaching focus consists of, but we suspect she instructs people in the proper use of gaffer tape, traditionally considered a highly specialized skill. Lois and I would like to be more adept at using gaffer tape. We are always sending bundles of packages to our grandchildren in Denmark and Australia, but we are not sure if we might not get some useful tips from someone working in the same specialty as Kathryn. We must do a little research on the web – we’ll have to see.

Onion reader Kathryn Kemp – we like her style!

We decide to send our opinion in to the Onion news source, in the form of a plea for better education in the use of gaffer tape, especially for older couples who have grandchildren abroad.

12:30 We have lunch and afterwards I go to bed and take a gigantic afternoon nap. I get up at 4pm.

I read 5 more pages of my Danish novel, "Klinkevals" by Jane Aamund. The novel's heroine, Juliane, a 30-something widow and mother to two teenage children, has found a young 21-year-old toyboy, Otto. She has sex with him every evening, but so far she has not said anything about their relationship to her children or to her sisters. She is afraid that her teenage children will disapprove of the affair, especially her 14-year-old son, Johan, who she is sure will not be happy to have a new stepfather who is only 7 years older than himself. And Juliane is also afraid that her 2 sisters will make fun of her because of the age difference.

Unfortunately, Juliane finds out that she has recently been the subject of gossip on the street. It's that kind of street where everyone knows everything about each other's lives. It is being said that she has a "boyfriend", and Johan, Juliane's 14-year-old son is already quite pissed off with her.

So she decides after all to introduce Otto to her children and to her sisters. Yikes! I see problems ahead - I have no doubts on that score !!!!!

Klinkevals - the film from 1999 starring Mette Lisby

18:00 We have dinner and prepare for Minx's big day tomorrow: a possible operation at the local veterinary clinic. Minx is the cat our daughter Alison left with us when her family moved to Denmark in October 2012.

The vet examined Minx's mouth on Friday and said that one tooth had been broken and another was cracked, and there was also inflammation on one side. She also examined Minx more generally and discovered that her heart showed signs of disease, diagnosable from the sounds her little heart was making. This would make the use of an anesthetic more problematic - with increased possibility of heart attacks or strokes. The vet said she would like to do blood tests to confirm this and also do a pre-anesthetic echocardiography if it was decided to proceed with the surgery on the teeth.

Poor Minx !!!! The worst thing is that Lois and I are not allowed to feed her after 8 pm tonight.

19:00 We decide to shut Minx in the utility room at 7pm for an hour and leave a bunch of cat food in her food bowls. But of course she refuses to eat anything, which is quite typical. She never eats when we want her to!

A pre-surgery photographic study: Minx, velcroed to Lois's skirt as usual.
Tomorrow is Minx's big day at the veterinary clinic

20:00 We turn on the television and watch an interesting documentary about the Odyssey, the famous Greek poem. The host of the program is the charming English poet, Simon Armitage.

The Odyssey is the story of Odysseus' ten-year journey home from Troy to Ithaca after the Trojan war. Along the way he meets countless dangers and temptations and loses his entire crew, while his wife Penelope is being wooed by others at home.

It is interesting to see Armitage travel from island to island over the beautiful Aegean sea, but it is a bit of shame that he knows almost nothing about the historical circumstances of the period when the poem began to be put together. He looks at the Odyssey just from a poet's viewpoint. It is typical of the BBC to invite an amateur host to produce such a documentary film, rather than an academic authority - they think this makes the subject matter more accessible for the average viewer. What madness !!!!!

"Let's find a TV host who knows nothing about the subject!" "Good idea, that will not intimidate the viewers!" (possible excerpt from a BBC script conference).

Armitage thinks Homer was a real life poet - perhaps he imagines that Homer worked on the poem in his private study, smoking a pipe and surrounded by bookshelves, like Philip Larkin, for example.

He perhaps imagines Homer creating Odysseus's personality and thinking up adventures Odysseus could get involved in. Armitage does not seem to know that the Odyssey was actually just a collection of older anonymous stories spread orally from person to person, a bit like thrush.

Homer, as Armitage perhaps imagines him - maybe like the British poet Philip Larkin,
working on a poem in his private study, surrounded by bookshelves.

My god, what madness !!!!

22:00 We go to bed - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz !!!!!
