Dicte (Iben Hjejle) udenfor Dagbladets hovedkontor i Aarhus

DicteBlurb: første afsnit af Dictes 2. serie starter næste uge
med morden af en prostituerede i Aarhus.
Hvem ville arbjede som prostituerede? Forventede levealderen

Lykkelige dage!!!

uden forældres bekymringer for første gang siden august 1975,

pop-up shoppen, som Lois’s kirke vil

en typisk Baby Bounce and Rhyme session

English translation

17:00 Lois and I are very tired, as is usual on a "Danish" day, where we always have to clear up in the house and lead the regular meeting of our U3A Danish group. And at the same time, we had to tidy up in the house and garden in other ways also, in preparation for our daughter Alison's visit. She and her family arrive on Sunday from Copenhagen.

Nevertheless, we are very pleased with our little Danish group. We are only 5 people, but we very much enjoy ourselves, and Lois and I are quite sure that the 3 others feel, and show, great commitment to the "project". It is also a lot of fun to share information about upcoming Danish shows and movies that the UK TV channels plan to show. And it's a lot of fun to discuss the programmes we've seen the next time we meet, and to speculate in the case of crime series, about who the perpetrator could be etc. Joy told us this afternoon that another season of "Dicte" starts next week.

Dicte is a newly-divorced journalist who moves home to her home town, Aarhus, with her daughter Rose. A town she has otherwise tried to put behind her, together with the memory of an upbringing as a Jehovah's Witness and of the child she gave away for adoption when she was young. My goodness!

She is employed as a crime reporter on the Dagblad newspaper, where she of course soon becomes involved in some unpleasant crimes, and she also starts a difficult relationship with a local detective, Wagner. The rest is history ha ha ha !!!

Dicte (Iben Hjejle) outside the Dagblad's headquarters in Aarhus

the first episode of Dicte's 2nd series starts next week
with the murder of a prostitute in Aarhus.
Who would work as a prostitute? Life expectancy
Is not that fantastic - no doubt about that !!!!

18:00 Lois and I have dinner - a low fat CookShop ready-meal with extra chicken (last night's left-overs) - yum yum !!!

We stick our feet up in front of the television. An old episode of Top of the Pops is on, from February 1984, very nostalgic - Lois and I lived in Maryland, USA, at that time.

They showed the video of Queens "Radio Gaga", a song I've always associated with a short vacation I went on with Lois in the countryside in northern Maryland when we heard the song several times on the car radio: our 2 young daughters, Alison (8) and Sarah (6) stayed for a few days in my sister's apartment in Washington DC - their first stay ever away from home. I remember how excited they were to pack their stuff into two small suitcases and drive in Kathy's "new" used Mustang (in the old days before wheeled suitcases were invented). Happy days !!!

Queen's "Radio Gaga"

Flashback to February1984 in Columbia Md - our 2 daughters,
Alison (8 and a half) and Sarah (6 and a half) along with my sister Kathy

Lois and I had a carefree weekend
without a parent’s worries for the first time since August 1975,
when Alison was born. We visited the area where the battle of Antietam
took place in the American Civil War.

21:00 We carry on watching television, an interesting documentary about driverless cars.

We have been looking forward to seeing this program because we often ask each other what kind of world it will be if/when we only have driverless cars. How will the system work and what kind of system will it be? We have thousands of questions, no doubt about that.

We enjoy the program to some extent! It's incredibly exciting to think about how different the world will look when it comes to the appearance of the streets, residential areas, etc. (Our cars can be "ordered" to leave their car-parks and drive by and pick us up when we need them !). It is also interesting to think, for example, of changes in the job market, etc., including less need for hospital doctors, because traffic accidents will have mostly disappeared - my god!

And we get an idea from the program about some of the technical challenges: for example, it's so complicated to teach a computer to recognise objects in the streets and roads and respond appropriately - much easier to get the computer to "teach itself" gradually using their own "experience". Help, stop the world I want to get off !!!!!

It's easier to let the computers teach themselves to recognise people
and objects and predict what they are going to do
Good grief  - stop the world I want to get off!!!!

We do enjoy the program, but at the same time we are a bit disappointed because there is a lot of wasted time in the documentary, film-sequences that are just designed to entertain viewers and encourage them not to change channels. We miss the good old-fashioned programmes that analysed a theme in a systematic manner, with detailed explanations and debates about the main issues, the pluses and minuses, etc. Come back, AJP Taylor, all is forgiven !!!!

AJPTaylor

Come back, AJP Taylor, with your good old-fashioned
academic style, your slides and your pie charts - all is forgiven !!!!

22:00 We go to bed - zzzzzzzz !!!!!

04:45 I get up early and do one of my routine Danish vocabulary tests.

07:30 I hop back into bed with Lois and we drink our morning tea. We get up and have breakfast.

10:00 Lois has been asked to help Andy, the most active of her Church's leadership, with managing the lists of church members who have agreed to staff the church's new pop-up shop, to be opened in a few days' time in the town . Each week he will compile a list of all the members participating in the project for the next 6 days (Monday to Saturday). He wants Lois to send the list out by email to all those who have agreed to staff the shop during the following 6 days.

The pop-up shop, which Lois's church will
run this July and August

Unfortunately, Lois has to get the email addresses from an Excel file and she is not quite sure how to extract the addresses and make a list of them, so she can attach them to a circular email. I help her do all that – I am so nice!

Unfortunately, Andy sends an answer back almost immediately, with some updated information, and he wants Lois to send out her email again - good grief! I feel sorry for Lois for having become involved in this task - I sense that Andy is not an easy person to work for.

12:30 We eat lunch and afterwards I go to bed and take a gigantic afternoon nap - zzzzzz !!!!!

13:45 Lois goes to the local library to help library staff organise and run the weekly Baby Bounce and Rhyme session for young mothers and their young children. The activities consist of children's songs for babies and parents (and grandparents). When our other daughter, Sarah, still lived and worked in England (until December 2015), Lois and I used to bring Sarah's twins to sessions - happy days!

a typical Baby Bounce and Rhyme session
at the local library. Lois helps library staff to
organise and lead the sessions.

15:30 Lois returns home and we relax with a cup of tea.

15:45 My sister, Gill, a retired teacher who lives in Cambridge, calls me. She is currently in holiday mood, for she has finally finished grading hundreds of exam papers - she has a part-time job at Cambridge University, and works in their international department in charge of international students (many of them from Hong Kong) who want to get qualifications in the English language.

My sister Gill (at 59 years of age)

She is now in holiday mood. I suggest she go out binge drinking this evening - at any rate it is what her students do at the end of the examinations. But she only says she has just poured herself out a large gin and tonic. That works, she says. Teacher knows best !!!

Thursday, 29 June 2017

Pop-up shoppen, som Lois’s kirke planlægger at åbne
midt i byen.

Anne ser meget mandlig ud, mens Chaka ser meget kvindelig ud.

English translation

16:30 Lois and I talk a little with Alison, our daughter in Copenhagen. For the first time, we use the whatsapp app to call her and it works well. She says her family will drive through Germany to Holland on Saturday, and take the ferry Saturday evening from the Hook of Holland. They arrive at Harwich [/ hærɪtʃ /], Essex early on Sunday morning . They expect to arrive in Cheltenham around midday if all goes well. They will update us via sms during the journey.

Ed, Alison's husband is coming along of course, but unfortunately, he will not be able to relax during the holiday. He has to go to work every day, either to Theale, Berkshire (where the company's head office is), or to London or maybe even to Sweden - good grief, what madness !!!!

We ask Alison what kind of food the children like, especially breakfast cereals and vegetables which they have always been fussy about.

Alison says the children are looking forward to spending a couple of weeks in England. They love their lives in Denmark, but it's a little strange to live on a small English-speaking “island” in the middle of a large Danish-speaking “sea” - I have no doubts about that. They attend an English-speaking school and belong to English-speaking groups when it comes to activities outside school, such as swimming, drama, rugby, etc. But when they are out in the town they are surrounded by the Danish language which they mostly do not understand.

When it comes to television, they have various cable channels and the internet with many movies available on demand, but not regular daily scheduled programs that start and end at a certain time, with commercial breaks, etc. Poor them !!!!

18:00 Lois and I are a little tired again. We have spent most of the day clearing up the house in preparation for Alison's visit.

19:15 Lois has to go out. She wants to attend her church's monthly business meeting taking place tonight in Tewkesbury. Alf drives by and picks her up. I have a little alone time and listen to the radio.

22:15 Lois returns home and we talk a little about her church's business meeting, which was about the pop-up shop the church is planning to run in the middle of Tewkesbury this July and August. Lois has agreed to help out with manning the shop on a few specific days. Church members have already equipped the shop with various displays, etc., which publicise both the articles in the Church's creed, and also the members' activities in the town.

I take a little look at pictures of the shop online and it looks very professional, I must say!

The pop-up shop, which Lois's church plans to open
in the middle of the town. How professional it looks !!!
Although the assistant in the corner (2nd picture) looks a bit too old ha ha ha.

Lois says there was a passionate debate about the content of the "goodie bag" that the shop's visitors can take home with them. Andy, the most active member in the Church's leadership, insisted that there should be an annual Bible reading plan in every goodie bag, although many other participants did not agree with him on that - I do not have the faintest idea of what the different arguments were. My goodness! Perhaps they thought it was a little pushy, but I'm not entirely sure. I'm rather sleepy for now - I can ask Lois about it tomorrow.

I go to bed, but Lois needs to wind down after the excitement of tonight's business meeting. I recommend an interesting program "First Dates" that's about first dates of potential lovers and whether they prove to be promising or not.

23:00 I do not wake up when Lois creeps under the blanket with me. Zzzzzzzz !!!!!

04:45 I get up early and do one of my routine Danish vocabulary tests.

07:30 I jump back in bed with Lois and we drink our morning tea. We spend a bit of time discussing "First dates", the programme Lois saw last night after I went to bed. Once again, she says, it was the heterosexual women who tended to reject the potential male lovers that Channel Four had chosen for them as date partners.

The couple who had the best chemistry were two lesbians, thinks Lois: Anne, who comes from Namibia, and Chaka, originally from Berlin.

Anne (left) and Chaka (right)
had the best chemistry, according to Lois

Chaka says she has occasionally been barred from gay nightclubs, because she didn’t look gay enough. Good grief – what madness!!!

One of the 4 heterosexual couples, Graeme and Daniella, also had quite good chemistry, says Lois. Graeme recently became a widower, and Daniella is an immigrant from Poland. We wondered if both had good practical reasons for starting a steady relationship - Graeme is struggling to raise two young children, and maybe Daniella wants to get married to strengthen her immigrant status in Britain. But maybe we are being too sceptical ??? We are not entirely sure about that.

Graeme has recently become a widower
and Daniella is a Polish immigrant. A marriage made in heaven ???

We go in the shower and then we get dressed. We get up and have breakfast.

09:30 Lois has to go out. She has an appointment at the local lady's hairdresser, Billy Shears. I get going with clearing up in the living room and vacuuming because our U3A Danish group's next meeting will be taking place here this afternoon.

I draw up a vocabulary test I want the members of the group to take. The correct answers spell the phrase "Grow peacefully, learn from trees" (a quote from Piet Hein [Niels Bohrs friend], it seems - good advice, I'm absolutely sure !!!!). The correct answers are top secret until 3pm, needless to say ha ha ha !!!

11:30 Sarah, our daughter in Perth, Australia, calls us. Jessica, one of her and Francis's 4-year-old twins has a fever and an upset stomach today. I think it was a bit of a relief for her to talk about it with Lois. Francis is not home at the moment - he is visiting his sick mother in Devon.

12:30 We have lunch and afterwards I go to bed and take a gigantic afternoon nap - zzzzzz !!!

14:00 I get up and prepare for the next meeting of our U3A Danish group.

14:30 The group members arrive and we talk about Joy's holiday in Poland and our holiday in Denmark and other topics. They like to talk together, and for once I do not stop them enjoying themselves in this way before I dig out my latest Danish vocabulary test and we finally start doing some work - my goodness! I want to show them that I can be jolly nice when I want to be ha ha ha!

After I have given them all their grades (A - high, B - good or C - bad ha ha ha), we resume reading our Danish crime scene, "Accursed" by Gittemie Eriksen. We only read 6 pages today, but I am content with that. We are all rusty - we have not met for 6 weeks so I want this meeting to be a fun start - we must not forget Piet Hein's advice: grow peacefully, learn from trees ha ha ha!

16:15 The members of the group have to leave. Lois and I relax with a cup of tea on the couch.

Wednesday, 28 June 2017

Lykkelige dage!!!!!

sine elskede drager flydende væk ind i himlen over sin højt elskede Fuji

I 1674 anklagede Jarl Shaftesbury kong Charles

English translation

10:30 We head over to Kennington, a small suburb of Oxford, to spend the day with our friends, Jen and Bill, and with Daniel, their son, who gets home from work about 4pm. Lois has known Jen since her childhood in Oxford - Jen is a couple of years older than Lois. We saw them all a few weeks ago when we attended Basil's funeral - Basil was Jen's father. He had just turned 100 years of age and had received the traditional birthday card from the Queen - and he actually died two days later. Poor Basil !!!

Lois and Jen are very very old friends, so of course they get on very well with each other. They like to talk about the old days, and also, Lois always helps Jen in the kitchen with cooking the lunch and dinner. This is slightly bad news for me because it means I have to sit in the living room and talk to Bill. I find Bill quite a challenge to talk to - he does not have a sense of humour and to me he has a rather boring personality, unlike Jen, who is so lively - damn!

It's a relief for me when Daniel, their son, comes home from work. Dan has a very good sense of ironic humour, although his life style differs from the norm in many ways: he is in his 40's, but still lives with his parents, which is a bit unusual. He works in one of the university's libraries. To the best of our knowledge, he has never had a girlfriend.

Daniel has many female work colleagues - that's something Jen is sure about because she has done some research on the library's website, but Daniel never talks about them, and only gives vague answers when Jen asks him about them - good grief, poor Daniel !!! We think he's just very shy.

Flashback to the summer of 1986:

and to the right Jen, with Daniel (11), Naomi (13) and Quentin (9)

Happy days!!!

21:00 We drive back to Cheltenham. Minx, our daughter Alison's cat, is very happy to see us - my goodness! We stick our feet up in front of the television and watch two documentary films in the BBC4's "Japan season".

The first is about Hokusai, the famous Japanese painter, who literally painted or drew thousands and thousands of pictures - every day of his life he just worked worked worked, up till the day he died (at age 90 years 4 months).

HokusaiListing

His birds and animals are so incredibly lively - we will not see Hokusai's like again. I'm a little jealous of him because he had such an absorbing occupation throughout his whole life.

When he was 90 years old and close to death, he painted his own farewell, collecting all his favourite elements into one painting - a simplistic image of his much-loved Mount Fuji with his favourite creature, a tall thin dragon floating upwards in a dark cloud about to disappear into the sky.

Hokusai painted his own farewell, with himself as one of
his beloved dragons floating away into the sky over his beloved Mount Fuji

This is the best way to imagine one's own death, I think: to die is to fly out of a (not necessarily open!) window up into the sky, free from pain and worries, etc. My goodness!!!

This kind of death actually happened in the case of RJ Mitchell, who developed the iconic Spitfire fighter in the 1930s. I saw it in a "biopic" (ie biographical feature film), so it must be true ha ha ha.

At the end of the film he becomes more and more ill and dies, in 1937, still a fairly young man (42 years old),. He becomes confined to an armchair. His nurse brings him a glass of milk and leaves him for a few minutes. We see his soul leave his body and fly out of the window and into the air, where the Royal Air Force is testing Mitchell's combat aircraft. His glass of milk falls to the floor where the nurse finds it when she comes back a couple of minutes later. My Goodness! How touching !!!

22:00 Lois and I are not night owls, but we stay up a little more so we can see the other documentary film, "Tokyo Girls", which is about yet another crazy Japanese phenomenon: the so-called "idols" - young Japanese women who dress up as school girls and suchlike, and sing and dance on stage in front of thousands of middle aged men. Good grief, what madness !!!!

Not for the first time, we get the impression that the Japanese live on a different planet from us. Japan seems to be a broken society in many ways, especially when it comes to the relationship between the sexes. So many men cannot be bothered to put up with the many challenges involved in building and maintaining a relationship with women, a process that seems to be particularly complicated in Japan, because of insane social conventions, we imagine.

the men – they are nothing without their female idols

the girls – they are nothing without their male fans

A mutual dependency. It seems sad in our eyes, but one cannot deny that both the men and the girls enjoy themselves a lot. But what madness !!!!!

23:00 We go to bed a little later than usual - zzzzzzz !!!!!

05:00 I get up early and do one of my routine Danish vocabulary tests.

08:00 I hop back into bed with Lois and we drink our morning tea. We get up and have breakfast.

09:30 We drive over to Bishops Cleeve. I pop in at the local shoemaker's and pick up a pair of shoes that they have put new heels on. Lois buys a new pair of sandals. We drive home.

11:00 We talk a little on Skype with Sarah, our daughter in Perth, Australia, and with Jessica, one of Sarah's 4-year-old twins - unfortunately, Lily, the other twin, is going through a shy phase at the moment.

and with Jessica, one of Sarah’s twins

13:00 We eat lunch and afterwards I go to bed and take a gigantic afternoon nap - zzzzzz !!!

15:00 I get up and read a few pages of my book about James, Duke of Monmouth, King Charles II's illegitimate son.

In 1674, Earl Shaftesbury, the opposition leader, published a political pamphlet, where he accused the king of trying to become an absolute monarch. As if Charles was wanting to prove Shaftesbury wrong (ha ha ha), the king demanded an immediate apology of Shaftesbury, and when he refused, he punished him with temporary imprisonment in the Tower of London.

In 1674, Earl Shaftesbury accused King Charles of
attempting to become an absolutist monarch.
Charles punished him with imprisonment (to prove him wrong perhaps???)

Shaftesbury was released a little later, but while sitting in the Tower, he entertained himself by making a list of all the members of the upper house and the lower house. Next to each name, he placed a letter 'w' next to his friends' names (w = worthy) and a letter 'v' next to his enemies' names (v = vile). Next to James's (the king's son's) name, he wrote three letter 'v's - good grief! He was obviously not a big fan of James - I know that for sure !!! Political jealousy is nothing new.

I recall that I made a similar list of friends and enemies when I was in 1st grade, but if I remember rightly, I never used more than 2 letter 'v's, even in the case of my worst enemy. But I was never sent to prison by anyone, so maybe this was not a surprise – but that’s something I’m not completely sure about.
