i grevskabet Devon for at genoplade vores batterier

Kirurgens uforudsigelige kone, Caroline (Lessing)

English translation

17:00 I go out into the back garden and clear up the branches I have cut off shrubs in the last two days. The council's garden refuse truck arrived very late in the day – just before 4pm: when Lois and I were still in bed we heard them down below under the bedroom window. They have a habit of varying their route (to surprise or annoy the homeowners perhaps?), so nobody is ever quite sure when the truck will come.

Most important is the fact that our garden waste bin is empty again, so I can refill it again - hurrah! We have such a big back garden that I sometimes wonder if it would be a good idea to order another garden waste bin, but of course this will double the council's price from about £ 40 to £ 80 a year, and I can be a little tight-fisted, I have to admit that.

I fill up the garden waste bin with cut shrub branches

18:00 We have dinner. Lois has decided not to attend her church's bible class / business meeting tonight. She is quite tired and she has volunteered to work in the church's pop-up shop tomorrow morning.

Church members have spent the afternoon chatting on whatsapp about the middle aged "weirdo" who has a habit of spending most of the day in the shop. He lives in a tent in the backyard of the Methodist Church, but the preacher has asked him (politely) to piss off.

Lois's church wants to help him in different ways now he has no place he can set up his tent. He does not receive any unemployment benefits at the moment, and Lois's friends have arranged an appointment on his behalf with the social services. The appointment is scheduled for Friday at 11am and a church member has agreed to accompany him.

The problem is that he is completely unreliable when it comes to appointments and interviews, etc. He suffers from "hallucinations", is an (ex?) alcoholic and gets nervous in the company of social services employees. Good grief, what madness, all of it !!!!

19:00 We sit down in front of the computer and book a week in a holiday apartment in the county of Devon near the town of Lynton, so we can both recharge our batteries next month.

We book a holiday apartment
in the county of Devon to recharge our batteries

20:00 Lois goes into the dining room to listen to her church's business meeting online. This worries me a little because I know Lois has difficulty sleeping after having taken part (whether in person or online) in one of her church's meetings or seminars, etc., instead of relaxing with me, but I cannot do anything about it.

21:00 I stick my feet up in front of the television and see the 2nd episode of a new sitcom (a medical comedy), "Quacks", which I recorded last night on our brand new YouView tv device.

The sitcom is about a trio of Victorian "medical experts", a surgeon, an anaesthetist, and a psychiatrist, in an era where knowledge about such fields of expertise was quite sparse, to say the least. And Caroline, the surgeon's unpredictable wife with her amusingly dark side, turns out to be nothing like the typical Victorian lady - very funny the whole thing.

In addition it's very amusing for television viewers who live in a period dominated by political correctness and "health and safety" to wallow in an era where there was no talk about potential risks when it came to alcohol, drugs, unsafe sex, lack of hygiene etc.

The surgeon's unpredictable wife, Caroline (Lessing)
finds herself locked in a dark closet with a horny Charles Dickens
and the 12-year-old assistant of her husband's anaesthetist.
The boy has accidentally overdosed on his boss's drugs,
which were left out on his desk - good grief,
what a crazy world we live in !!!!

21:30 Lois returns to the living room and tells me a little about her church's business meeting. My heart sinks when I realise that Andy, the most active and enthusiastic member of the Church's leadership, has persuaded the church members to keep the church's pop-up shop open after the end of the month. Damn! The original plan was to keep it open only in July and August.

The decision means that I will have to continue to drive Lois over to the town and pick her up later in the day, whenever she agrees to help. It is fortunate that her upcoming eye surgery will at least give us a short break from it all - good grief, what madness !!!!! But I must try to become more charitable ha ha ha!

22:00 We go to bed, but Lois feels restless and I suspect she will move to another bed later on and turn on the light to read something light or amusing without disturbing me. It does not suit her to take part in stimulating meetings in the evening.

02:00 I wake up and go to the bathroom. As expected, I find myself alone in the bed - Lois has crept out and hopped into Sarah's old bed.

05:00 I get up and do one of my routine Danish vocabulary tests.

07:00 I hop into Sarah's old bed with Lois and we drink our morning tea. We go in the shower and get up. We eat breakfast.

09:00 I drive Lois over to Tewkesbury and drop her off behind her church's pop-up shop in the middle of town. She has agreed to help with manning the shop this morning. I drive home.

10:00 I make 2 lunches and put them in two plastic tubs in the fridge.

10:30 I get going with tidying the house and vacuuming because our U3A Danish group's next meeting will be taking place here this afternoon at 2:30 pm.

12:45 I drive over to Tewkesbury and pick Lois up. We drive home and have lunch on the patio.

Lois says the morning in the church's pop-up shop was very successful again today, with a bunch of "customers" and lots of interesting conversations. Also many of the church's books and booklets got sold.

She says that on Saturday morning there will be a special campaign for a couple of hours based in the shop where church members with clipboards in hand will stand on the sidewalk in front of the shop and try to persuade passers-by to enroll in the church's next series of Bible seminars starting in September. Lois feels that she must help by sitting in the shop and making tea and snacks for the church members with the clipboards.

Good grief - sometimes I go into panic mode when I hear about this pop-up shop, which is threatening to take over our lives - whenever Lois agrees to help out, it means I have to drive her over to the town and pick up her later in the day. The Church's leadership, especially Andy, are so overenthusiastic - it's a bit annoying - to put it mildly !!! Enough is enough, in my opinion !!!!

14:30 The members of our U3A Danish group arrive and we study Danish for an hour and a half. I give them a Danish vocabulary test and afterwards we read the next 10 pages of our Danish crime novella, "Accursed" by Gittemie Eriksen.

Per Jansson, a married police constable in a normally quiet Danish village, is investigating a string of murders of classmates in their 30s who were in the same class in their childhood, as well as the murders of their teachers. Per has fallen in love with one of the surviving classmates, Pia, a local lawyer.

But Per's private life with his wife, Vivi, is also interesting and amusing. His wife is a bit of a tyrant who does not give Per much peace in the house. She scolds him because he arrived late after the day's interrogations the police hq, because she had hoped to go to dinner with a world-renowned movie star, Ria Raben, who lives in the area. Poor Per !!!! But lighten up, Per - I have read a few pages in advance and she lets you have sex with her on page 106 (Kindle version) ha ha ha!

16:00 The members of the group have to go. Lois and I relax with cup of tea on the couch.
