Ofcom (reguleringsmyndigheden for
kommunikationsindustrien – red.),

Maggie går i kirke her for sidste gang.

ingenting at observere i dag – pokkers!!

i kø for at score hende – du dumme dumme Gunnlaug (igen)!!!!

Stakkels Maggie!!!!

English translation

17:00 I sense that I'm already beginning to feel a little nervous. Tomorrow I have to take part in a communal lunch together with Lois and her church's members, where I have to be sociable and friendly - oh dear, what a nightmare !!!

Maggie, Lois's friend, is going to church for the last time tomorrow because she is moving to a nursing home in Birmingham on Tuesday. The church in the town of Tewkesbury has organised a farewell lunch for her.

Maggie has no car any more, and Lois is not allowed to drive a car due to cataracts, so it's my responsibility to pick Maggie up and drive the two women over to Tewkesbury.

18:00 Lois and I eat dinner. Afterwards, I sit myself down in front of the computer and print out the next 3 chapters of "Gunnlaugs saga ormstungu", a saga in Old Norse, written in the late 13th century, but set during the reign of the English king Ethelred II, the Unready (968-1016 ).

After the church's lunch in tomorrow, I will be able to creep out of the church, hide away in the car in the car park, watch the customers going in and out of the local tattoo shop, and at the same time read a little Old Norse - hurray! Scilla's U3A Old Norse Group is holding its next meeting on Wednesday in the county library in the town center, and the saga is our latest project.

20:00 Lois and I spend the evening watching television. An interesting documentary is on about an ambitious remake of the famous "Dirty Dancing" movie, to be reproduced on the small screen by two British actors from the north of England: Keith Lemon and Paddy McGuinness.

Keith Lemon

Paddy McGuinness

I have not myself seen the original movie, so Lois gives me a quick summary. The film is set in a resort in the Catskill Moutains area. Patrick Swayze plays a dance teacher who has a young woman, Penny (Cynthia Rhodes), as his regular dance partner. Penny apparently unfortunately becomes pregnant after a one-night-stand with a waiter. Good grief - what a crazy world we live in !!!!

The Lemon / McGuinness remake is quite successful, but there are also parts where their new version does not work well, we think. The most distressing thread in the original movie is perhaps Penny's pregnancy and illegal abortion in a dingy back-street.

Lemon and McGuinness think this theme is a bit too dark for British television viewers, and they rewrite the scenes in question, so Penny now has a constipation problem instead of getting pregnant. Lois and I are not completely sure that this scenario is as dramatic as the original one, but the "jury" is still out on that one!

In the remake Penny has a problem with constipation,
instead of an unwanted pregnancy, but
Lois and I are not quite sure this new plot line is
as successful as the original one. The jury is still out on that one!

In addition, it's a bit of a shame, we think, that the ITV channel allowed obvious product placement of the worst type, in the form of a focus on a Kellogg's All-Bran packet, which is a bit surprising.

This is product placement of the worst type,
Lois and I think. What madness !!!!
Ofcom (Regulatory Authority for the Communications Industry - Ed),
please take action - and fast!

It's also a bit unfortunate that Jake, the rich doctor who eventually cures Penny's constipation, has a wife (Kelly Bishop in the movie) who in the remake is unfortunately played by an apparently alcoholic English actress - I cannot remember her name. It's a bit distracting to see her drunk behaviour (eg on the dance-floor or on the golf course), which has nothing to do with the plot.

The role of the rich doctor's wife is unfortunately played
by an apparently alcoholic actress.
Her intoxicated behaviour in front of the tv cameras, which has nothing
to do with the plot, is merely distracting, we think.

22:00 We go to bed - zzzzzzz !!!

04:15 I get up early and do one of my routine Danish vocabulary tests.

08:00 I amble out to the kitchen and make two cups of tea. I take them up to the bedroom and jump into bed with Lois. We drink the tea and go in the shower. We get up and have breakfast.

10:00 I get started with printing out the next 10 pages of our Danish short story, "Accursed", by Gittemie Eriksen. I translate the hard words into English and print a vocabulary list at the bottom of each page. Our U3A Danish group has chosen this short story as our latest project.

There have already been 10 murder victims in this quiet Danish village - all the victims were about 37 years old, except for one older lady. They all went to the same class at the local school: their former teacher has also been killed. The local police constable is investigating these mysterious killings, and details are begining to emerge about various cases of bullying back then in the class - good grief, the excitement is mounting, no doubt about that !!!!!

Various 30-year-old cases of school bullying
are beginning to emerge - good grief,
What a crazy world we live in !!!!!

11:30 We drive over to Leckhampton and pick up Maggie, Lois's friend, and drive to Tewkesbury. Maggie is going to church here for the last time. On Tuesday she moves into a nursing home in the Birmingham area. Church members have organised a farewell lunch for Maggie, and after that they are holding the usual Sunday service (today's second - good grief!).

Personally, I do not look forward to taking part in these kinds of lunches, because I have to be sociable and friendly - oh dear, what a nightmare !!! But I'm lucky today because the lunch has been delayed and there's only 20 minutes left for it, so I eat fast and disappear before the afternoon's service begins at 1:45pm. No time to chat - hurray!

14:00 I hide in our car in the nearby parking lot and read the 8th chapter of the Icelandic saga, which Scilla's U3A Old Norse group has chosen as its latest project.

I have parked in the corner of the parking lot where I can observe the local tattoo shop and the weird customers that come in and out. But unfortunately the store is closed for some reason - damn it!

the local tattoo shop is closed unfortunately.
Nothing to observe today – damn !!!!

But that was a digression - sorry! Back to our old Icelandic saga!

Gunnlaug, the hero of the saga, an 18-year-old Icelandic skjald (bard), has left Helga, his beautiful fiancee, in Iceland in order to go off and see the world - which was very stupid because Helga is Iceland's most beautiful girl and the men are waiting in line to score with her. Stupid Gunnlaug !!!!

Why did you leave her, Gunnlaug?
You stupid stupid Gunnlaug !!!!!

Helga is Iceland's most beautiful girl, and the men are waiting
in line to score with her - you stupid stupid Gunnlaug (again) !!!!

Gunnlaug first travels to Norway, then to England, where he meets with the Anglo-Saxon king Ethelred. In this 8th chapter, Gunnlaug then sails to Dublin and afterwards to the Orkney Islands: both places were ruled by Vikings kings or earls at that time; eventually Gunnlaug travels to Sweden.

the Viking lands

In each country he visits, he meets with the local king / earl, and is invited to a feast where he presents one of his poems. The kings and the earls tend to be crazy about the poems and give Gunnlaug an expensive gift as a reward. Yawn yawn !!!!

But I believe there is more sex and violence coming in the next few chapters, so we must not give up hope of reading something a little more exciting ha ha ha.

15:30 The church service has finished. I pick up Lois and Maggie in front of the church and we drive back to Maggie's house in Leckhampton. She invites us into her house (now almost free of furniture - good grief, poor Maggie!). We drink tea with Maggie and say goodbye. We drive home. What a day!!!!!

We drink a farewell cup of tea with Maggie in
her practically unfurnished house. Poor Maggie !!!!
