Stakkels Roger!!!!

Gro Pedersen, min yndlingsvulkanolog,

for 2 uger siden.

Uha !!!!!!!

16:30 Lois and I pop into the neighbours' garden to water their plants. Stephen and Francis are currently on a short vacation in Berlin.

we water our neighbours' plants,
while they are away in Berlin

While we work, my smartphone beeps to tell me that Roger Moore has died aged 89. Poor Roger !!!! But I decide to honour him by keeping his voice on our Tomtom device in the car.

Two years ago, I bought a new voice for my Tomtom device on the Internet: and I chose Roger Moore's (it cost £ 7.50). Lois and I both really like Roger's voice and he is calmness personified - which helps a lot when driving a car in a strange city and finding you are lost.

Roger has exactly two so-called "jokes", which we hear from time to time. The direction to "Take the motorway!" is always accompanied by "And don't forget the speed limit!". The instructions for "driving straight ahead" are always accompanied by "if there isn't a brick wall in front of you" ha ha ha. He was much more amusing as James Bond - I know that for sure! I used to 'advise' him in the car to get a new writer, but now it's too late - poor Roger !!!!!

We will think of you tomorrow, Roger, when we drive to Oxford to attend a funeral - although it's not your funeral, it's someone else's !!!

Hail to thee, Roger, you kept us out of traffic jams!

17:15 We have dinner a little earlier than usual and afterwards we have to go out. Lois wants to attend a Bible seminar taking place this evening in the Brockworth Library, and she is not allowed to drive a car at the moment due to cataracts. I drive her over to Mari-Ann and Alf's house in Hatherley and drop her off in front of the house. Mari-Ann and Alf will drive her over to Brockworth.

18:30 I come back home and relax with a cup of coffee. I have a little alone time and spend the rest of the evening listening to the radio and watching some television. An interesting documentary is on, in the BBC Channel's "Horizon" series, all about volcanoes, both on Earth and on other planets and their moons, and I learn a lot of fascinating facts that I did not know - my god!

During the program I see a lot of my favourite volcanologist, the Dane Gro Pedersen, whom I usually call "teeth woman". She has the most amazing icy teeth (an expression the English comedian, David Walliams, once used in a poem he wrote when he was still a schoolboy).

Gro Pedersen, my favorite volcanologist,
who has the most amazing teeth! Don’t bite me, Gro !!!!

I also see many film sequences shot in Iceland, a country that has more different types of volcanoes than any other countries. When the Vikings discovered Iceland in the 9th century, they saw volcanoes and experienced volcanic eruptions for the first time - of course, there are no volcanoes in northern Europe. These eruptions they explained by presuming that Surtr was a little angry with them. Surtr was in nordic mythology ruler over Muspelheim and the fire demons, and he owned a special sword that burned and whose flames shone more than the sun. Oh my god - I'm glad I've never met him, I'm absolutely sure of THAT !!!

Earth's moon once had volcanoes and we can still see the big canals where the lava once flowed. The moon is now completely cold and dead. It could not retain its heat because of its small size relative to the Earth. Poor moon !!!!!

Mars has the solar system's largest volcano, which is 15 miles high - good grief, scary !!!! The planet does not have any tectonic plates - there is only one big gap in the surface of the planet, so all the lava comes out in the same place and creates one absolutely massive volcano - what madness !!!!!

22:00 Lois comes back home and I go to bed. But Lois needs to relax and wind down after the evening's stimulating Bible seminar. I recommend she looks at "First Dates" which is all about the first dates of potential boyfriend-girlfriends and girlfriend-girlfriends, and whether they prove to be promising or not.

23:00 I do not wake up when Lois crawls into bed with me. Zzzzzzzz !!!!!

04:15 I get up early and do one of my routine Danish vocabulary tests.

07:00 I amble out into the kitchen and make two cups of tea, a little earlier than usual, because today we have to attend a funeral in Oxford. I take the tea up to the bedroom and jump into bed with Lois. We drink the tea and get up. We eat breakfast.

08:30 We head over to Oxford to take part in our friend Basil's funeral. We do not take the direct route because we prefer to see the beautiful Cotswold hills, so we drive through a number of small towns and villages: Charlbury, Wootton, Bletchingdon and Islip. We arrive in a timely manner at a car park near the church, and pop into the local Moroccan café to have a piece of cake and a cup of tea.

A couple of old friends, Ian and Zelda, show up and have a cup of tea with us in the café. They have also come to attend Basil's funeral.

11:30 The funeral begins. We hear something of Basil's life. He was a volunteer firefighter during World War II, and then worked as an office worker at the Oxford University's Finance Department. My late brother, Steve, got his first job ever in the same department. Steve lived just around the corner from the office, but he was not a morning person. Basil used to pop into Steve's block of flats and wake him up when he failed to show up at work, which was very kind of Basil - I have to admit.

Two weeks ago Basil turned 100, and he got a birthday card from Queen Elizabeth. But everyone knew (including Basil) that he was dying - my goodness, so it was not a surprise when he died peacefully in his sleep a few days later. Poor Basil !!! Lois and I will miss him - no doubt about that. Lois has known him all her life.

14:30 Lois and I drive home and relax with a cup of tea on the couch. We are very tired and feeling our age. Oh dear !!!!!!!
