They are not long, the weeping and the laughter /    Love and desire and hate / I think they have no portion in us after / We pass the gate. / They are not long, the days of wine and roses: /     Out of a misty dream / Our path emerges for a while, then closes /    Within a dream.

Sarah, vores datter i Perth Australien.

17:15 I hop up on my exercise bike and clock up another 6 miles (10km). As usual, I watch old pop songs / videos on YouTube while cycling, and each time I put the year one year back. Today, I have got back to 1959 when my parents, my 3 siblings and I lived in Sale, a small suburb of Manchester.

Ed "Kookie" Byrnes, star of "77 Sunset Strip"
and my sister Kathy's great idol

flashback to summer 1959.
My sister Kathy (11), my cousin Kathleen (11)
my brother Steve (5) and me (13).
Kathy was already several inches taller than me,
which was a bit annoying (until my later "growth spurt")

18:00 Lois and I have dinner and afterwards we talk on Skype with Alison, our daughter in Copenhagen, and Ed her husband.

We talk on Skype with Alison, our daughter in Copenhagen
and with Ed her husband. It's a lot of fun, but we're all tired - my god !!!!

Ed talks about the different options when it comes to his next job after his current job ends in December. He says he is very excited that companies in different countries have shown great interest in him and enthusiasm about the possibility of employing him and he has not felt this enthusiasm for many years.

There are 3 options currently: USA, Hong Kong or Holland.

The US option would be the best for his career in the long run, but the competition is fiercer - he would be in competition with the woman who is his American opposite number. Ed is also a little concerned about Trump's ambivalence with regard to foreign workers in "US" jobs.

The Dutch option is the one he knows least about - but he has arranged to talk with some of the company's management tomorrow (Monday) to get more details. Ed and Ali are not captivated by the location of the company, in Zwolle, which is quite a big town, but unfortunately it is a bit out in the wilds. The family really needs to live in a town with a thriving expat community.

But both Lois and I feel that Hong Kong is number 1 on Ed's list because the company in question is very interested in employing him and it would be a thrilling place to live for the whole family, with new experiences (both in work and in private life), a new culture, and new opportunities to travel in the region.

It's hard for Lois and me not to share Ed and Alison's enthusiasm, even though it means they would be on the other side of the world. It would be a bit selfish of us to think of our own needs and not be excited for their sake - my god!

21:00 We spend the rest of the evening watching television. Our plan to ban TV and electronic displays after 9pm has been dropped after just 2 days - good grief!

The 4th episode of the 2nd season of "The Durrells" is on, all about the British Durrell family (Louisa, a widow plus her 3 sons and 1 daughter), who lived on the island of Corfu in the 1930s, a true story, based on the autobiographical books written by Louisa's youngest son Gerald Durrell, the famous naturalist, later in his life.

A touching episode. The family is isolated in their house for a few days due to an extended monsoon. Lawrence, the eldest son and future author, is worried about his testicles: he got mumps after he went to bed with the woman who owns the house. His mother and siblings try to comfort him, but they do not want to see or check his testicles, which is perhaps understandable.

Lawrence, Louisa's eldest son is worried
about his testicles, but his mother is there for him, as always

Lawrence's 3 siblings are also very supportive.
It is at such times that it is good to be
a member of a large family - no doubt about that.

The youngest son, Gerald, who later becomes a famous naturalist, comforts poor Lawrence with some reassuring data from the animal world. For example, he has found out that the bush cricket's testicles make up 14% of its body weight. Unfortunately, this information makes Lawrence even more concerned about his own testicles, which is a bit of a shame.

Gerald's "reassuring" information unfortunately makes
Lawrence even more concerned, which is a bit of a shame

The mother, Louisa, has begun to miss her dead husband again and tries to contact him, using a medium who turns out to be charlatan. Poor Louisa !!! But she learns from the experience and decides to think more positively in the future.

She collects the family together in the living room and recites Ernest Dowson's famous poem. "They are not long, the weeping and the laughter / Love and desire and hate / I think they have no portion in us after / We pass the gate. / They are not long, the days of wine and roses: / Out of a misty dream / Our path emerges for a while, then closes / Within a dream. "

22:00 A very emotional ending. Lois and I go weeping to bed - zzzzzz !!!!

04:15 I get up early and do one of my routine Danish vocabulary tests.

I take a little look online and I see a charming new profile picture of Sarah, our daughter in Perth Australia, which she has posted on Facebook.

Sarah, our daughter in Perth Australia.
She will be 40 next month.

08:00 I amble out into the kitchen and make two cups of tea. I take them up to the bedroom and jump into bed with Lois. We drink the tea and get up. We eat breakfast.

10:30 We sit down in front of the computer and book a room in a guesthouse for 4 nights in late July in the Bournemouth area. Lois's cousin's daughter, Julia, has invited us to her wedding with Roy. Her first marriage ended in divorce recently.

12:30 We eat lunch and afterwards I go to bed and take a gigantic afternoon nap - zzzzzz !!!!

15:00 I get up and relax with a cup of tea on the couch. Lois tells me about a play she has just heard on the radio based on a true story.

It's about an unmarried man in the 1700s, Thomas Day, who wanted to marry the "perfect wife". He adopted two orphaned girls from a orphanage, one redhead and 12 years old, the other fair-haired and 11 years old, and he tried to train them to be "perfect wives".

He did not want them to like beautiful clothes or hairstyles, and he did not want them to be afraid of dirt, so he forced them to lie down in mud and get dirty. He also wanted to teach them Rousseau's philosophy - it all seems to be a strange combination. After a few years, the two girls refused to continue with such training so Day's project failed. What madness !!!
