Vi hører et interessant radioprogram, ”The Last Word”.

hjemmelavet appelsinmarmelade – hurra!

English  translation

18:00 Lois and I eat supper and then we spend the evening watching a little television. They show a film, "The English Patient", which we have never seen, although we know the film's soundtrack music well - it's nice to put faces to a music soundtrack - no doubt about it!

The film is not really our kind of thing (too long and too much suffering !!!), but we enjoy the flashbacks to the period before the war in Egypt, when Mrs. Clifton (Kristin Scott Thomas) engages in a steamy affair with the mysterious Hungarian, Count Lászlo Almásy (Ralph Fiennes), while Mr Clifton (Colin Firth) is away on business.

The bathtub scenes are especially good, we think. But as often, Lois finds the husband more attractive than the lover. How often the film companies forget this basic rule! It should be written in large letters on the wall of each film company's head office: UGLY HUSBAND, SEXY LOVER !!!

Our conclusion: probably a bureaucratic clerical error or oops-situation in the film company's offices when the staff were in the process of distributing roles - such things happen more often than you would think!

"The English Patient": Lois and I need to get some relief
from all the suffering, all the death, all the steamy bathtub scenes !!!

Minx, Alison's cat, unfortunately misses the entire movie.
She sleeps heavily on Lois's lap - she must be
very tired, we think. Poor Minx !!!!

20:30 The movie is far too long, so we impose our own 30-minute break. We need to get some relief from all the suffering, death, and steamy bath scenes. We hear an interesting radio program, "The Last Word". I listen in the living room, and Lois listens in the kitchen so she can prepare the oranges and the lemons she needs - tomorrow she will hopefully make 10 pounds of orange marmalade - yum yum!

We are in the habit of hearing this program every week because we want to find out if anyone in the last 1-2 weeks has died or not (I have noticed that most weeks there are only about 5 deaths so no panic). The program's host is the charming Matthew Bannister.

William Peter Blatty sadly passed away recently (aged 89), the man behind the movie "The Exorcist", the award-winning American horror film from 1973 (Blatty wrote the original book).

It is amusing that Blatty was able to begin his career by winning a fortune in a radio quiz, Groucho Marx's "You Bet Your Life", where he pretended to be a Saudi Arabian sheik. Groucho asked him where he came from and he replied with a fake thick Arabian accent "Saudi Arabia, I am a Saudi" which Groucho misinterpreted as "Minnesota".

Blatty was basically a comedy writer, but after the success of "The Exorcist" he was henceforward not "allowed" to write comedy, which of a bit of a shame. He had already written, for example the script for "Shot in the Dark", the first (and best) Pink Panther movie, starring Peter Sellers. And despite the fact that the Exorcist was a horror movie, there are surprisingly a number of jokes in the film. Even the Demon is a comedian, and tells jokes, it seems !!! That's my kind of demon - I know that for sure !!!

Exorcist: even the demon tells jokes
- my god, what madness!!

Meanwhile, Lois cuts up the oranges and the lemons into 4 pieces and puts the lot into two saucepans. Tomorrow she will hopefully make 10 pounds of orange marmalade - yum yum!

3 pounds of oranges and two lemons ....
10 pounds of marmelade on the way - yum yum!

22:00 We go to bed - zzzzzz !!!!

05:00 I get up early and take a look at the web.

07:30 I hurry into the kitchen and make two cups of tea. I bring them up to the bedroom and crawl into bed. We drink the tea and get out of bed. We eat breakfast.

10:00 I sit at the computer and order two copies of one more photo-book from Snapfish. The book includes photos I took when we were on vacation during the Christmas season in Denmark and Sweden, staying with our oldest daughter Alison and her family. The book also contains photos that Sarah, our youngest daughter, took in Perth Australia over Christmas and New Year.

Lois starts preparing her 11 jars of homemade orange marmalade.

Lois begin to prepare
11 pounds of homemade orange marmalade - yum yum!

13:00 I make lunch for 2 and then go to bed and take a gigantic afternoon nap - zzzz !!!

15:00 Lois comes upstairs and pops into bed with me. She is very tired - she has spent all day on her feet in the kitchen.

16:30 We get out of bed and relax with a cup of tea and a piece of bread with homemade orange marmalade on the sofa - yum yum!

We relax with a cup of tea and a piece of bread with
homemade orange marmalade - hurrah!
