English translation

17:00 I cough a lot, and I am suffering from a sore throat. I suddenly realize that I cannot take part in Lynda's U3A "Making of English" group's monthly meeting, which takes place tomorrow at 2.30pm. I send her an email.

It's a shame that I've spent some hours today thinking about the questions Lynda wants the group members to discuss tomorrow, but I do not regard it as wasted time. I am happy that I feel I understand many aspects of Middle English and the influence of the Normans on our language.

I feel like I now understand why the English language survived. The language was certainly in grave danger when the Normans ruled both England and the major part of France, but as soon as the connection between the two countries was broken (in 1204, when King John lost his French domains), the survival of our language was guaranteed and after that we suddenly see many examples of beautiful poems and prose works being written in English.

It also helped a lot that the Normans never showed interest in forcing the English to speak French. Basically they did not care what ordinary people did or did not do!

18:00 We have dinner, and then we listen a little to the radio, but I am feeling a little worse, and go to bed early. Lois will sleep in Sarah's old room tonight because I am coughing a lot, and I do not want to disturb her.

23:00 I wake up. I am suffering from indigestion. Lois helps me find a packet of Rennie tablets. I go back to sleep.

04:00 I wake up again. I have a bad headache. I hurry into the kitchen and get hold of a packet of paracetamol. I go back to sleep again.

07:30 Lois comes in the bedroom. She brings the obligatory cup of tea - hurrah!

09:00 Lois serves me breakfast (porridge with golden syrup - yum yum!). It's nice to be waited on for once!

I have many symptoms: cough, headache, indigestion, sore throat. I'm not sure that my packet of paracetamol is helping a lot. I shiver sometimes, even though the weather is mild.

13:00 We eat lunch.

I go to bed and listen to the radio, an interesting program (part 5 of 5) about Karl and Emma Jung's marriage. After 4 episodes where the pace is very slow, and not much happens (except that Karl makes Emma pregnant five times, and his patients and students ask him to make them pregnant too - oh dear!), the last episode is stuffed with intense drama and exciting events - my god!

Sabine, who for many years was Carl's "other woman" leaves him, and a new potential mistress shows up, Antonia. She eats with the family and practically moves into the house. She goes for long walks alone with Carl. Their relationship lasts many years, and when Carl and Emma go on vacation, Antonia goes too - my god! Carl and Emma stop sharing a bed.

Also in this episode we find out that Carl has a strange hobby. He spends many hours in the backyard building whole miniature villages of stone and earth, with streets, houses, churches and so on. The rest of the time he spends with Antonia in his study or in the countryside during their long walks.

Emma is determined to save the marriage, and both she and Antonia train as psychoanalysts and help Carl treat the patients. Emma becomes a writer and writes a book about the legend of the Holy Grail and its psychological significance.

What a strange story! Before the end of the program I fall asleep unfortunately - zzzzz !!!!

16:00 I get up and we relax with a cup of tea on the sofa.
