under London.
Keltiske krigere havde for vane at halshugge
deres
Huset hedder
stadig ”The Old Telephone House”.
Bagefter laver jeg to
kopper te og tager dem med op i soveværelset. Jeg kryber tilbage i sengen og vi
drikke teen.
Tewkesbury, hun vil deltage i.
English translation
18:00 We have dinner and then we
spend the evening watching TV. They show an interesting documentary about the
hundreds of human skulls that archaeologists have found in London and the
surrounding area over the past 200 years. The skulls date from the Roman
period, and are not accompanied by other body parts. The program's host is the
charming actor Jim Carter, who plays the butler in the Downton Abbey drama
series.
At the end of the program, we
realize that the experts are not entirely sure why so many skulls have been
found: a total of 300+, but this likely represents only a fraction of the
whole: there are undoubtedly thousands of skulls waiting to be discovered.
Recently, a gigantic project, Crossrail, has been started, which will establish
a new 26-mile east-west railway through London, and even more skulls have been
found. Many of the skulls date from about 125 AD
hundreds of human skulls from the Roman
period
have been found as a result of London's
giant Crossrail project
"Londinium" soon became one of
the Roman Empire's largest cities
The experts know that Europe's
Celtic peoples had the habit of beheading their enemies and exhibiting the
skulls as trophies. There is evidence that in about 125 AD there was a
rebellion in London. It may be that both the rebels and the local Roman army
(which mostly also consisted of Celtic soldiers!) all beheaded their enemies
and that's why we find so many skulls under London.
Celtic warriors had the habit of beheading
their enemies - oh dear, what madness!
It seems amazing that we know so
little about the history of this period that no expert can prove conclusively
why so many skulls have been found. That's why archeology is so fascinating, I
think.
21:00 During a commercial break
in the middle of the program I go up into the bedroom and look out the window.
I see that a gigantic fire truck is parked in front of our neighbor's house.
I look at the house located on
the other side of the road, a house that until 40 years ago was the village's
local telephone exchange. The house is still called "The Old Telephone
House". White smoke rises from the chimney. I see a fireman take a bucket
into the house, and the smoke quickly disappears. Hoorah! Lois and I can sleep
soundly in our bed tonight - no doubt about it !!!!
A fire truck has been parked in front of
our neighbors' house.
On the other side of the road, we see the
village's former telephone exchange,
now a residence, that has an unusual
chimney.
22:00 The fire engine has gone.
We go to bed - zzzzzz !!!!
04:00 I get up early and take a
look at the web. Afterwards, I make two cups of tea and take them up to the
bedroom. I crawl back in bed and we drink the tea. We get up and eat breakfast.
07:00 I get a text message from
Sarah, our youngest daughter, who lives in Perth, Australia. The owners of the
family's house in Yanchep have asked them to leave the house with 30 days
notice. Sarah says she and Francis, her husband, have found a house in
Currambine that might be suitable, but she must prove to the house owners that
they can afford to pay six months' rent in advance, if necessary. I agree to
lend them the sum temporarily, so they have more money in their bank account -
my god!
10:00 I sit at our computer and I
begin to order 3 more photo books from Snapfish. These three photo books
contain photos I took when we were on vacation during the Christmas season in
Denmark and Sweden. This Christmas was one of our best Christmases ever, thanks
to Alison, Ed and the children - that I know for sure!
11:00 Lois has to go out. There
are two services taking place today in Tewkesbury that she wants to take part in.
She is riding with her friend, Maggie.
11:15 I open three packages that
the mailman brought yesterday: a new Plusnet router, a YouView + TV unit, and a
BT broadband extension kit. I begin to remove the old router and replace it
with the new one, but halfway in I change my mind. I decide to send an email to
my old friend, Mark. I ask him to come and help me this week. The process is a
little complicated, and I do not want to lose my internet connection by mistake
- my god! I am getting old - no
doubt about it !!!
13:00 I eat lunch and then I go to bed and take a gigantic afternoon nap - zzzzz !!!!
15:00 I get up and take a look at the web.
15:30 Lois comes back and we relax with a cup of tea on the sofa.
