De viser Top of the
Wildes ”Kids in America”.
i 1950’erne.

”The Good Old Days” er meget underholdende, som altid. Showets stjerne i
for – du godeste!
at køre forbi fredag aften (i dag) for at hente babytøjet.
for at hente babytøjet.
var bedste venner.

18:30 We're both very tired (Lois has for several hours been in the process of making piles of orange marmalade, while I have for two hours been talking about the Proto-Germanic language - my goodness!), So we decide to make and eat one more of the three prepared meals, we bought the other day in CookShop - my goodness!
Then we spend the evening watching TV. They show Top of the Pops from March 1981 and then "The Good Old Days", from 1976, a program that tried to recreate the atmosphere of the Victorian and Edwardian "music-hall" or "vaudeville" (ie music halls).

In Top of the Pops from March 1981 we get for the first time the impression that there has finally really started the style of music that characterized the 1980s: electronic music as an expression of alienation, but also the "new romantic" movement - hooray! The most memorable song of the show is again Kim Wilde's "Kids in America". She is still very slim (later in the decade she put a little weight on - oh dear!), She looks morose, sour and cross out in a fashionable way; In addition, she has her iconic striped jumper on - hurray!
I did not know that this song, Kim's first song and first hit, was written by her father and her brother. Kim's father, Marty Wilde, was a famous pop singer in the 1950s. My late sister, Kathy, was quite hot for him - I remember that very clearly!

"The Good Old Days" is very entertaining as always. The show's star
of the evening is Ronnie Corbett, the "diminutive" Scottish comedian
who in 1976 was 46 years old.
21:00 Our youngest daughter, Sarah, left behind piles of baby clothes and toys with us a couple of months ago, when she moved to Australia with Francis, her husband, and their two and a half year old twins, Lily and Jessica. Lois and I did not know to begin with, what to do with all these baby clothes etc.
a pile of baby clothes, we cannot get rid of - my goodness!
Lois's friend, James, offered recently to take this pile of baby clothes to a
charity that is part of the nursing home in Birmingham where his father lives.
He promised to drive by and pick them up a week ago, but he did not show up. On
Wednesday he called us and apologized: he said he had "forgotten" to
come, and he promised to drive by on Friday night (today) to pick up the baby
clothes.
Ha ha ha! Uuuh, promises, promises! The time is 9pm and he has not shown up. My goodness - has he forgotten again ??? We cannot trust him - it is both certain and sure !!!
22:00 James has not shown up. We go to bed - zzzzz !!!!!

3:15 I get up
early and take a look on the internet. I can hear that outside it is raining
heavily and blowing hard - my goodness! What awful weather!
09:00 James calls us. He says he will drive by in about 10 minutes and pick up the baby clothes. My Goodness! But I'm not very surprised. I knew he would not contact us until the last moment - oh dear! But we are very happy that he's taking the baby clothes away.
11:00 Our friends Edward and Claire have invited us to lunch. We have been friends with each other for 35 years. They have two daughters, Angela and Linda, who are the same age as our daughters, Alison and Sarah. The four girls were best friends before we moved to the US in 1982, and for a few years after we came back to England in 1985.
We drive over to Edward and Claire's house, and have lunch with them. We have many interesting conversations. Edward has many strong opinions about contemporary society and the many historical questions - my goodness! It is strange that Lois and I ask a lot of questions about their lives and about their two daughters, Angela and Linda, but Edward and Claire are not at all curious to know anything about our lives and about Alison and Sarah, even though the 4 girls were best friends for many years.
Unfortunately there is not a lot of good news about Angela. She is 40 years old. She lives in London with her husband and her 8-year-old daughter, and she works as a civil servant for the Ministry of Environment, but unfortunately she has had to fight against breast cancer for 7 years. Poor Angela. Linda, Angela's sister lives and works in Walsall. She is 38 years old and still unmarried. She teaches nurse training.

Flashback to 1986. Alison is
celebrating her 11th birthday in the backyard of our current house. Angela, the
girl with the beautiful long blond curls, is sitting at Alison's right hand.
15:00 We drive home and going to bed. I take a long nap - zzzzz !!!!!
16:30 I get up and we relax with a cup of tea on the couch ....
