(a) Luc Hoffman (schweizisk
miljøforkæmper og medstifter af WWF – World Wildlife Fund) er død på 93 år;
(b) Joe Powell, britisk
Vores rute i dag tager os omkring
byens kirkegård for at se kirkegårdens tre
”stjerne-grave”:
(1) James Elroy Flecker, den
digter, der skrev ”The Golden Journey to Samarkand ”
eksisterede – stakkels mand!
(3) Brian Jones, rytmeguitarist
i det engelske band The Rolling Stones.
Brian Jones’s grav

17:00 I jump up on my
exercise bike and cycle 6 miles (10 km). Hooray! I know I can get well again!
18:00 We have dinner and
afterwards spend the evening watching TV: University Challenge and Only
Connect, two of the few TV programs are not suitable for the very stupid - ha
ha ha!
21:00 We listen a little
to the "radio": "Last Word" I actually last night recorded
on vhs. Long live the VHS generation!
We hear about some of
the famous and the lesser known but interesting people who died over the last
two weeks: for example Sylvia Peters (90 years). She was one of BBC TV's three
continuity announcers in the 1950s (the other was Mary Malcolm and McDonald
Hobley. Back then, one saw always one or other of these three between all
programs, and their job was to tell the network television viewers a few
details about the next program. Especially in the years before 1955, when there
was no other network except the BBC, these three announcers became very famous.
All three talked with the very British upper class accent that even the Queen
today has given up!
Sylvia
Peters, who has died (90 years)
In the program we also
hear about others who recently died:
(A) Luc Hoffman (Swiss
environmentalist and founder of WWF - World Wildlife Fund) has died at 93
years;
(B) Joe Powell, British
stuntman who participated in many films, including three James Bond movies, has
died at 94 years. He became involved in the film industry after he happened to
meet the famous actor Dennis Price at a bus stop in London when he was 24 years
old.
(C) Sandy Perlman,
American music producer who became involved in the British punk-rock scene, has
died at 72 years.
(D) William Smethurst,
English radio and television producer, has died at 71 years. He produced the
famous radio soap opera "The Archers" from 1978 to 1986, and the
famous TV soap opera "Crossroads" from 1986 to 1988, when the program
was cancelled.
I have noted before that
relatively few people die in their 80s. For the most part, the most dangerous
years are the 70s and 90s. So if you can only reach age 80, you have a good
chance of surviving another 10 years or more. At least it's my theory!
22:00 We go to bed -
zzzzz !!!!
5:30 I get up early and
do one of my routine Danish vocabulary tests.
08:00 I hurry into the
kitchen and make two cups of tea. I bring them up to our bedroom. We lie in bed
and drink the tea.
09:00 We eat breakfast
and then go for a short trip. On the way we pop into Waghornes, the local
butcher to buy bread and meat.
Then we continue our walk.
Our route today takes us around the town cemetery to see the cemetery's three
"star-graves":
(1) James Elroy Flecker,
the poet who wrote "The Golden Journey to Samarkand"
(2) Charles Sturt, a
British explorer whom we heard about, when we were in South Australia a few
months ago. We did not know at the time that he died in 1869 in Cheltenham. He
tried to find Australia's so-called Central Sea, but he realized finally that
this sea did not exist - poor man!
(3) Brian Jones,
guitarist of the British band The Rolling Stones. Brian was born and grew up in
Cheltenham.
Charles
Sturt's grave, the man who tried to find Australia's "Central Inland
Sea"
Brian
Jones's grave
12:00 We get home and
eat lunch on the terrace. Afterwards I go to bed and take a giant nap - zzzzz
!!!!
15:00 I get up and we
relax with a cup of tea on the sofa.
