Joan i 1992

Hun døde i 1996.

18:00 We eat dinner and then spend the evening watching TV: several episodes of Big Bang Theory (the eighth ie penultimate series).

20:00 We stop watching Big Bang Theory and change channels. We see an interesting drama documentary about the life of Alan Turing, the famous mathematician.

It was very interesting to see how much he was through his whole life ahead of his time and hear about his forward thinking. In 1930 he devised a mathematical treatise on the basic process that every computer in the world nowadays uses. And in the 1950s, in other papers, he was the first in the world to discuss "artificial intelligence" and also mathematical biology.

During World War II he worked at Bletchley Park. He broke the German Enigma code and devised a computer that would be able to decode German military messages super-fast.

The program includes an interview with Tony Sale, the man who saved Bletchley Park buildings in the 1990s from becoming dilapidated, and set up a charity to protect and preserve them for future generations.

Lois and I visited Bletchley Park in 1998 with a group of work colleagues, and Tony Sale greeted us, gave a short speech and showed us the most important buildings, including the famous Hut 6, where Turing worked during the war.

1998: Lois (aged 52) stands and listens in front of Hut 6. Tony Sale (left) speaks to us of the work in Hut 6 done by Alan Turing and others during the war.

The program also includes an interview with Joan Clarke, one of Turing's work colleagues who in a short period was engaged to him. Turing admitted finally to her that he was homosexual and broke off the engagement a day later.

Joan continued to work in the same field after the war. She was the chief of the department where I worked for a few months in ca.1975 . She died in 1996.

22:00 We go to bed - zzzzz !!!!!

5:15 I get up early and do one of my routine Danish vocabulary tests.

08:00 I hurry into the kitchen and make two cups of tea. I bring tea up to our bedroom. We lie in bed and drink tea. We pop quickly under the shower and then eat breakfast.

10:00 Lois has to be off. She is to meet with Rose and Sheila, two of her former work colleagues, to drink a cup of coffee with them at M & S restaurant. I go out in the backyard and weed a little around one of our two apple trees.

12:00 The man from QBD Windows rings the doorbell. He goes ahead with replacing two window panes, one in the dining room and the other in the bedroom, where there is moisture between the two panes. It takes about 30 minutes.

our bedroom windows before ....

... and after - Hooray, now we can see the sun shine when we lie in bed!

13:00 I make lunch. Lois comes home and we eat on the terrace. Afterwards I go to bed and have a giant nap - zzzzz !!!!!!

15:00 I get up and we relax with a cup of tea on the sofa.
