Sorte
mennesker, bøsse mennesker, lesbiske mennesker begyndte at arrangere kæmpe
adoptere for vores U3A danske gruppe.
Lois smutter ind hos naboerne (Bill
Her krydser vi Englands ostkyst over Lincoln-grevskabet og floden Humber.
Som Frank Sinatra sang, "And the Humber River,
makes you start to quiver.....
Like the latest 'flivver'
That's simply dripping with chrome" !!!!
sofaen.
English translation
17:30 We eat dinner. Then Lois
must away. There is a Bible seminar taking place tonight in Brockworth she
would like to participate in. She must not drive in the evening or at night
time, because of cataracts - poor Lois! Her friend, Ken, is driving her over
there.
I have a little time alone, so I
listen a little to the radio, an interesting program that is all about the
disco craze of the 1970s. The program's host is Martha Reeves, the former
Motown star.
It is sometimes interesting to
hear about phenomena one knew nothing about. I always thought that the disco
craze was just another music-and-dance-craze that became a bit boring after a
few years. I had not the slightest idea that it had a political angle.
The craze actually started in New
York in about 1970 as a "movement" that consisted of huge dance
parties in basements and so on. It all became a part of the various liberation
movements that started in the 1960s, gay liberation, women's movement, the
black liberation movement, etc. Black people, gay men, lesbians began to
arrange huge dance parties and “lost” themselves in the music and dance.
The disco craze's message was:
love, peace and "empowerment", the personal empowerment of women's /
blacks' / gays' positions in both private life and society.
The craze's symbolic end came in
1979 in a park in Chicago when a local dj set fire to piles of old disco
records. According to Martha Reeves, program host, this event was a reaction
from white, heterosexual men who could not dance and did not like to see their
lovers dancing with gay men! My goodness - what a crazy world we live in !!!!
22:00 Lois comes back and we go
to bed - zzzzz !!!!!
05:00 I get up early and do one
of my routine Danish vocabulary tests. Afterwards, I make two cups of tea and
bring them up to our bedroom. I creep back into our bed, and we drink the tea.
We get up and eat breakfast.
10:00 We go out to weed a little
in the vegetable garden, which became a true jungle while we were in Australia
between April and June. But the work is progressing - no doubt about it!
12:00 We eat lunch and afterwards
I go to bed and take a gigantic afternoon nap - zzzzz !!!
15:00 I get up and begin to
devise the strategy I would like to adopt for our U3A Danish group. We will be
finished with our current textbook "Beginner's Danish" in a few weeks
and I must then devise my own approach and my own materials, so we can make
progress and get on with learning the language. It will not be so easy - I must
admit !!!!
Lois pops in at the neighbors
(Bill and Mary) to talk a little with them and drink a cup of tea. Mary
unfortunately suffers from a sort of mild dementia.
Our house is one of four homes
that were built in approximately 1930. The houses' owners are all retired:
Frances and Stephen (the "young" ones) are about 65-68, Bill and Mary
are 80, Bob (widower since last year) 80 years, Lois and me (70). My God! We
have become a bunch of old crows - I have no doubt about that !!!!
I have a bit of alone time, so I can think about our Danish group's future. The best thing would be if we can
start reading genuine Danish short stories, but I do not know if members of the
group would be afraid to take this step. In this way we would really start to
understand Danish society. I have an example of a Danish short story that I
want the group to try to read, "Sister," which is about two Danish
teenage girls. I learned in this story that every Danish high school has a
party committee, which is not something you find in English schools, I think.
Today in the Danish media, I read a news item about a Danish high school where
some students were expelled after the school's party committee invited two
strippers (a male and a female) to perform at the school - my god! What madness
!!!
I also read today in the Danish
media that a Scandinavian couple who arrived at Copenhagen airport missed their
flight because there was a huge queue, 2000 people, who were waiting to get
through airport security - my goodness! I certainly hope that Lois and I do not
get this problem when we visit Alison, our oldest daughter and her family in
Copenhagen at Christmas - I have no doubt about THAT!!!!
Flashback to December 2015. Lois and I were
waiting for our flight
at Copenhagen airport. No queues thank
goodness !!!!
Flashback to December 2015, we were flying back to England.
Here we cross England's east coast over Lincoln County and the Humber River.
As Frank Sinatra sang,
"And the Humber River,
makes you start to quiver .....
Like the latest 'flivver'
That's simply dripping with chrome "!!!!
16:00 Lois has not come back yet.
I relax with a cup of tea on the sofa.
